Thursday 5/9/24 WRL Clown Ride: Participants: Larry K, Kenny J, Bob M, Lynn M, Butch Y, Terry C, and me. Larry and Kenny both rode solo. Bob M led Lynn, Butch, Terry and me out of Sunset Bay on an initial lake lap and SoPac Trail up-and-back. Everything was going well on our trip up the SoPac, until I noticed in my rear-view mirror that I couldn't see Terry and Butch. I turned around and rode back down the trail to look for them. Bob and Lynn kept riding. When I found them, Butch was in the process of changing out a punctured tube on the rear wheel of Terry's 700. Once that was accomplished, I led them at a high pace on the completion of our first 20+ miles. We passed Bob and Lynn, headed south, shortly after we started riding north, again, on the SoPac. We didn't see them again, until we arrived back at Sunset Bay. After a break at Sunset, Bob led us out on another lake lap and SoPac up-and-back. About a quarter mile from the Mockingbird Ln. overpass on East Lawther, I couldn't see Terry and Butch in my rear-view mirror. I turned around to search for them. Bob and Lynn kept riding. I found them on East Lawther, near the entrance to the trail on the north end of the lake property. Again, Butch was changing out a punctured rear tube on the rear wheel of Terry's trike. The puncture was in the same general location of the puncture on the previously changed out tube. Butch and I couldn't find the source of the puncture. After Butch repaired and re-installed the tube, we continued riding back to Sunset Bay. When we arrived at Sunset, Bob and Lynn had already packed it in and departed the scene. Butch and I rode to the Green Spot, where we met Kenny and Terry for lunch and conversation (They drove there). Following lunch, Butch and I decided to complete a counterclockwise lake lap, despite the fact it was sprinkling rain. When we reached the Dog Park bridge on East Lawther, we took it as a short cut, because the sprinkling was getting heavier. Once we got on the west side of the lake, the sprinkling gradually subsided to nothing, and we completed the rest of our trip back to Sunset Bay in the dry. I got in 51.5 miles at a 17-mph average. My 2007 Catrike Speed trike's chain has been making a racket in the area of the T-Cycle double idlers, under the seat, for a number of weeks. Found out, yesterday, that the previously smooth surface of the return idler had been chewed up. Bypassed the idler by installing the chain in a PTFE chain tube. Drivetrain is now silent. Idler was 16 years old. The original power idler failed about 6 months ago. Speaks well for the quality of T-Cycle idlers.
