LSR 100k Populaire, October 28th
Oct 20th, 2007, 9:40pm

This ride is hosted by Jerry Austin. It starts Sunday, October 28th, 9:00 am, at the new Bicycles Inc location in Arlington, at the southeast corner of I-20 and Green Oaks. This is not a super early start, so everyone won't have to get up at dark-thirty to get there. 100k is just 60 miles, so even with the late start, there will be plenty of time to finish before dark.

There are no membership requirements for a populaire. For anyone who would like to find out what the randonneuring style of riding is like, without have to start with the longer distances of brevets, this ride would be a great ride for that. I'm planning on doing the ride, and I'll be glad to help anyone who wants to make this their first randonneuring ride.

I'll be there, though I'm not sure which bike I'll pull out.  I'd like to know the route, so I can match the bike to the route.

Who knows, I may bring the new Honda so you all can moto-pace a sub 3 hour 100k.

Can anyone just "show up" for this or do I need to register or do something else beforehand?  I'm pretty sure my schedule is open for this Saturday and I'd like to join everbody.  I think 100K is probably doable for me if the roads are not too hilly or someone will make me tone it down a little!

All you have to do is show up. There still isn't a map or cue sheet posted, but considering the ride is leaving from southwest Arlington, I wouldn't expect it to be a terribly hilly route.

Robert,

I had the honor of riding withyou as you tore up the hills in Glen Rose recently.  You can easily do a 100k out of S. Arlington.  Plus there are mandatory "controls" every 25-30 miles, where you have to stop and get a card signed and time stamped.  This allows you plenty of opportunity to rest.

Can we get a roll call of bents that are planning on participating:

Bud - yes
Steve - yes
Robert - yes
Ray - yes
Peggy - depends on work schedle

Come on everyone - I know there are a bunch of you out there.  I want to meet all the other DFW rbent riders. Spread the word... Oh, did we say there is no "fee", so the ride is free.  Everyone come out and see what Randonneuring is all about!

Good eye, Steve. I hadn't noticed that Robert wrote "Saturday". The ride is, indeed, Sunday.

Glad you guys are looking out for my absentmindedness!  I'll see if I can rearrange my church schedule so I can be there Sunday.  Put me down as a maybe/probable for this Sunday.
Ray, maybe if I hadn't "tore up" the hills in Glen Rose I wouldn't have been cramping near the end! Grin  My relative inability to do longer rides (anything >45 miles) has always been related to cramping, never because I've been tired.  However, I've had no trouble with cramping until Glen Rose since I got my Corsa.
See you Sunday (I hope).

I would love to ride the 100K but this Sat & Sun are already committed. The bad thing about this time of year is that events start to pile up. I would like to try some longer distances. Maybe this rando thing will develope. On a high note my back is back. Im about 90%. Another couple good days and I will call myself healed. Smiley

Robert, to your point about church... Angie and I are very active in our church.  As a matter of fact, I am captain of the stage crew, and spend about 4 hours every Sunday performing very physical work (setting up the band's equipment, sound, lighting, etc). I worked out a back-up plan for this Sunday.

I sent an e-mail earlier today to Jerry Austin, who is sponsoring this Sunday's Populaire.  I asked him if he'd send me the cue sheet (in Excel) so I can print in large font.  Here is Jerry's reply (note that you can link to the cue sheet from inside bikely.com)

Ray,

There is a choice of 100k or 150k on Sun.  Here are the maps on Bikely.com

In addition to my post above, I plan on riding the 150k Populaire this Sunday.  After completing this ride, if I ride two 200k in November and one 200k in December, I'll finish the year with just over 5000k of LSR mileage.  Every 1000k earns you a nice year end medal.

You can look at any members results on the RUSA site.  Just click on "Results" in the "Search For" area and enter the persons name:

Dang, I sure don't like a couple of miles of those roads.  CR615 and CR506, just north of Venus, had some horrible gravel stretches when I rode on them a few weeks ago. Has Jerry been on them lately?

Is their any interest in this 1:00PM  Ride
Reply #13 - Oct 22nd, 2007, 11:14pm

I cant make the 9:00AM start on Sunday due to a volunteer commitment at church.  But according to the FWBA forum their is a 1:00PM start for a 38mile 100K ride at the same Bicycles Inc location.  Is their any interest in this 1:00PM ride?  Some of YALL could ride both.  Smiley

Message from the FWBA forum
Quote:
Plans for the joint FWBA / LSR ride this Sunday have gotten a little
unscheduled, as the FWBA ride has moved their start time to latter in the
day to better accommodate the store employees. The LSR group will still
start at 9:00am from the new Bikes Inc. location in Arlington. We will have
a 100km route and a 150km route, courtesy of Ricky Ray. Pace will vary, and
we should have several different groups riding at several different speeds.
Depending on the route you pick and the speed your ride you may finish in
time to do both rides Smiley We would love to have you join us. There are no
membership requirements, just the good ol' waiver.

Happy Trails, DanD

Bud, I am not familiar with those roads.  Can you reach out to Jerry and let him know?  His e-mail address is:

jeraus@aol.com

I was going to mount my Zipp 404's, but if there is gravel, then I'll ride with my 28mm Brevet tires.

Looks like I'm "go" for this Sunday.  I usually go for a longer ride on Saturday mornings and a shorter ride before 11:30 church on Sundays.  I'll just reverse that this week and attend our Saturday evening service, which I've never been to and need to see what it's like anyway.  See everyone at Bike's Inc!

I wondered why FWBA had a ride at the same place later in the day. I didn't realize it was originally supposed to be a joint LSR FWBA ride. I emailed Jerry and asked about the roads.

I'm probably going to do the 150K, as of the moment... However, there's also a 200K Permanent out of Princeton on Saturday that might work better for me...

The Bicycles, Inc. location there has a recumbent guy on staff, Robert Purinton.  He/they appear to specialize in Cycle Genius and Sun products, but are apparently also going to start carrying RANS.

Oh, what the heck, a 9AM start at least means I don't have to wake up at 5AM to get there...   I'll probably join in for the 100K, at least...  We'll see how the Princeton 200K treats me on Saturday!

Robert - glad you are joining us.

Bud - let me know if Jerry responds about the roads.

Everyone - who is riding the 100k, and who is riding the 150k?

I am riding the 150k.

Steve/Peggy - did you submit your RUSA membership? Combining the 200k you just finished, this upcoming ride, and potential rides in November and December, you could come close to 1000k.  You earn a nice year-end for riding 1000k, 2000k, 3000k, etc...  I'll bring a few of my medals so you can see them.  The R12, IMHO is the nicest medal.  For $10, you can purchase a medal for last week's 200k.  My best suggestion is to strive to achieve the coveted R12 award.  To receive this award, you have to successfully finish at least one 200k for 12 consecutive months.  It can be either a Brevet or Permanent.

Jerry replied and said he hadn't ridden the route (it's Rick Wilson's) but knew about the gravel. What else was he going to say? It's too late to change the route.

I'm game for whatever distance. It sounds like we have one doing the 150k and one doing the 100k so far. What distance were you planning on, Steve? Greg, are you coming out to ride your favorite gravel?

The gravel patches are all 100 yards or less, and contained within a three mile stretch. The rest of the route should be fine.

Bud/Greg,I'll ride whatever distances you guys want to ride. It really doesn't matter to me. I'm not sure Peggy is going to be able to join us(that work thing). It doesn't sound like the road conditions are going to be much different between the 100K or the 150K.

Ray,Yes, we joined RUSA on Saturday(after the ride). Dan was going to submit our application & ride info. I wouldn't mind the R12 award. Thanks for asking about the asking.

Well, it looks like the 100K and 150K stay together on the same route until Venus, which is the turnaround for the 100K.  At least we'll have an opportunity to ride together for a while, no matter which distance is being done!!

After all this,I was riding this afternoon & felt  a sharp pain on the exterior of my right knee(I felt this same pain during the last 1/2 of the 200k last Saturday). After 9 miles,I turned around & limped home. The family doctor has referred me to an orthopedist. So,I see him & see what he says. I can't imagine it's anything too serious. But I won't be riding at all this weekend(and probably for the next week or so).

Sorry all, sometimes we have to listen to what our bodies are telling us, but I won't be riding this weekend's Populaire & may not be riding the at the 200K in Winnsboro. I would hate to get stuck in the middle of nowhere & have this problem flare-up again.

Well hell, another one bites the dust.........

Hang in there, Steve! Here's hoping that it's not too serious. I guess if you have to ease up on your riding, the coming winter months aren't a bad time to do it.

So, it's Paul, Robert, and I for the 100k, Greg and Ray for the 150k. Anyone else coming?

Wow... It was great seeing so many recuments at yesterday's event.  Since Dan refers to me as a "switch-hitter", I rode my DF.  It was great to officially meet DJ, and see Ken and Robert on the ride.

Here's my ride debriefing.

For the first 10 miles or so, Greg, Paul and I were playing see-saw with the lead groups.  Shortly after that I started talking to Sharon Stevens.  Somehow, which is common with me, we missed a turn and had 5 bonus miles.  When we got back on course we caught up with Greg and DJ.  That's when we encountered the road from hell.  Jagged rocks, bumpy road... Yuck....

DJ was doing to 100k, so he had to stop at a control in Venus.  I kept going as the first control for the 150k was in Maypearl.  At this point, I was riding alone, and assumed that since I got off course, everyone was way ahead.  A few miles later, a group of "A" riders appeared in my mirror.  As they got closer I heard Pam yell at Dan, slow down you're killing us.  Later he told me that when he saw me ahead, I became the rabbit, and he had to chase down.  Val had a flat, so they all waited for him.

I rode the remaining 80 miles with this group.  It consisted of the following "A" riders:
Dan Driscoll
Pam Wright
Mark Metcalf
Sherry
Shellene
Richard Whitaker
Jerry Austin
Robbin Phelps
Val Phelps
We averaged 18-20mph.  On the flats, we rarely were under 20mph.  We were in and out of the control fairly quickly for this size group.  We finished the 100 miles in a little over 6 hours.  That's total ride time, including bonus miles, stopping to change a flat, stops at 3 controls, etc...

Around mile 80, I don't remember what town, I was about 100 yards behind the group, catching up after a pee break.  A car pulls out quickly from the left, trying to beat oncoming traffic.  They didn't see me, and "bumped" into my.  I was able to move to the side of the road to negate a significant, eat the pavement, accident.  I quickly caught the group and told them what happened.  We caught this vehicle at a traffic light and followed them into a gas station.   Dan immediately defended me, and began jumping all over her.  The woman driver said she didn't know she hit me and began apologizing since a group of 10 cyclists surrounded her car!  I'm fortunate it wasn't worse.

Be careful out there everyone!

It was nice to meet a couple of the guys I see on the forum but have never met -Paul and Greg specifically.  I hung out around the back of the main pack the first several miles, but flatted going over those first railroad tracks - my first flat on the Corsa!  Bud and Ken caught up to me there and we stayed together the rest of the 100k.  Frankly, the track left a lot to be desired.  About the worst road surface I've ever tried to navigate on a bike in places and way to much traffic on way too narrow roads for much of the second half of the ride.  Despite that, the company was excellent and I did get my longest ride yet on the Corsa with NO CRAMPS!  Thanks, Bud, for being a great navigator.  I'd still be out there somewhere if you weren't in the lead.

Ray, glad you survived your encounter with the auto.  I was so frustrated at times with the stupid drivers, I asked Bud if he knew whether or not they made a 50 caliber mount for a Corsa!

Yeah, the route definitely left a lot to be desired. This is actually the FWBA Bicycles Inc metric century route. LSR scheduled this ride to be a joint ride with FWBA, but that part of it fell apart, with the FWBA version starting at 1:00 pm. I had done the FWBA version before, but we didn't hit Rendon Road just at the time the churches were letting out, like we did yesterday. FWBA plans to make the Sunday afternoon Bicycles Inc ride a regular ride during the winter. Unless they change the route, I don't think I'll be joining them again on this ride. The Lone Star Randonneurs usually pick better routes than this.

Bad route and all, I still enjoyed the ride. It was great seeing everyone, and all the recumbents about. Glad you weren't seriously hurt, Ray.

Excellent ride reports. Very nice to hear the 'bents had a good turn out.  Again, sorry I had to miss the ride. What a beautiful day for a bike ride! It sounds like a little drama was thrown in for good measure(Ray's incident with the car. Ray,glad to hear you're "OK").  Very dangerous stuff.

Robert,Bud is an excellent navigator, strong rider & helluva nice guy.  I trust Bud's review of routes. If  I had to miss this ride(due to a sore knee),this maybe the ride to miss(based on the bad road conditions/traffic).

Congratulations to everyone that rode. I hope you enjoyed yourselves.

Holy crap, Ray - glad you're ok.

Steve - you didn't miss anything other than the company (which was excellent, if I may so so.)  The route stunk up the place.  I don't seem to feel any ill-effects despite having to cut my ride short and the burning sensation in my lungs when I breathed.  So hopefully the burn was just crud coming out of my lungs and there's an end to it!

Greg, you're 100% correct. The thing I miss the most is the fellowship with riders such as yourself.  Bud was dead on with his concern regarding this route.

Yes, except for the crappy 3 mile pothole/gravel section (TWICE) and having to dodge all the Babtists getting out of church on the 6 miles of Rendon Road, it was a good ride, and a beautiful day!   I hung with the lead group till the Venus checkpoint, having averaged a little over 18mph to that point.  Having just completed the "Honey Dog-Doo" 200K the previous day, I was pleasantly surprised to feel no ill effects whatsoever from those exertions, trying to keep pace with Shellene, Mark, and others.

I'm just glad we didn't encounter the Lost Bull...   Shocked  (see pic below)

After that, I regrouped with Greg, DJ, and Sharon, and we started the return when Bud and his gang arrived, and kept a fairly constant 15 minute difference between us the rest of the way.  Sorry to not hang back to keep everybody together, Bud, but Sharon wanted to be back before 1:30.

Good to meet you, Robert, and glad everybody made it through the 2nd half "unscathed"...  Although Sharon said that she apparently developed a couple of significant cracks in her rear wheel from that pothole/gravel section -- glad I went bombroof for the weekend!
