Visit to the Soap Box Derby Museum
Jul 23rd, 2018, 2:59pm

Went to visit my daughter in Akron, Ohio and dropped by the Soap Box Derby museum and racetrack up there. Brought back many good memories from my childhood. VERY interesting to see how all of the top contenders have gone to recumbent drivers. Man, are the things sleek and aero!!! The helmets they are required to wear are built in to the car. The little window that they look out of is minuscule!!!! Quite a bit different from the 1939 winner's car that was made from tin, riveted together--about three feet tall, compared to the one foot of the recumbent champs of today.

Adults should have fun so kids will want to grow up!

For every mile of road there's two miles of ditch.

I'd rather be sorry for something I did than for something I didn't do.

I remember mine and my older brother's 1st soap box car. We found some old 2" x 4"s, lawn mower wheels, rope for steering, and a peach crate for the front body. The seat was an old rusted out tractor seat without the spring. It is flatter than a pancake in SE Georgia. We had races down the old Sidney Lanier bridge. They would only let us use the last 100' of the bridge. No helmets or any other safety gear in 1958. One of the front axles broke on my brother's first run. He had a scar from the road rash. He wore it as a badge of honor! Smiley
