Rough Road 01/12/2008
Jan 13th, 2008, 1:16am

Rode all but @15 miles of my planned 150K route, had to cut it short because of time constraints.  More paved than I thought some of the roads have become civilized, and some were worse than I thought.  Some spots had a deep large rock covering of gravel that was hard to get over even with 650b x 32 tires on the Lemond.  I reckon the MTB would have been a better choice.  Will have to take another day and hit the Greenbelt Corridor trail, and find an information control somewhere in the middle.  I posted four pictures up on flickr.

very little traffic! But fairly scenic, although the scenery does stay similar!

Hope to see you guys next weekend at the 1/19 brevet!

Take Care,
Nelson.

Sounds like you're in the spirit of the popular (but now defunct) Tour de Gravel that was held for a couple years around Lindsey, Texas. Too bad my neck can't take much more than 20 miles or so on my mountain bike, these days.

Hi Nelson - sorry I couldn't ride with you yesterday.  I like the picx.  Do you think it will work as a Populaire, or is it too rough?

I've been traveling, and was in town long enough to have fenders and the Phil Wood bottom bracket installed on the new bike.  At the moment, I'm sitting in the Hyatt in New Brunswick NJ, directly across from Rutgers Univ.  I missed the exit to the hotel, and had to circle through the university.  Decent weather today, but rain/snow for tomorrow.  And that's lovely, as when my meeting is over tomorrow, I'll have to drive down I95 through rush hour all the way through Philly and almost to the PA/DE border.

Keep me in your prayers, and I hope to see everyone for the Brevet next Saturday.

Hi Ray and Mike,

I'll have to look for a course description route for the Tour de Gravel, sounds like my kind of ride!

Ray I think it will still work the worst sections of gravel only amount to a few miles of the route.  Actually with the dry conditions some of the dirt/fine gravel sections are smoother/faster than rough chip seal!  I found myself really moving on some of the smooth dirt, had to make up for the 6-7mph I was doing on the heavy gravel section.  You can ride it with 650 x 32B's but just barely, they're really too narrow to float over the rocks, and I kept sliding around.  I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have had the same issue with the 26 x 1.5 street tires on the MTB, although you still would need to be careful.

Good Luck with the trip, look forward to riding this weekend with you!

Take Care,
Nelson.

You know I find my Corsa handles pretty well on gravel and slippery conditions, not sure I could push the easy racer through though.  The front end tends to slide pretty easy in such situations.  What kind of bent did you ride John?  I was thinking I could have ridden everything yesterday on a Giro 26, but I just can't put wide enough tires on the Corsa.

Take Care,
Nelson.

I rode a suspended Vision with 1.5" tires.
With 63 gears I had to be careful on some of the hills not to spin out.

I have heard the Easy Racer is a mite skittish on gravel.
