El Caballo de Simon Permanent
Nov 9th, 2007, 8:57am

Hey, Stradas --
There's a LSR/RUSA 200K "Permanent" route that starts/ends in Pilot Point, and goes through Celina that you might be interested in arranging a ride for sometime...

  http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/El-Caballo-de-Simon

George Evans is the owner...  to do a "Permanent" (for credit) it's suggested to contact the owner at least a couple weeks ahead of time.

Any chance you might be interested in doing it on Sunday the 25th, with a 7:30AM-ish start (assuming it's not freezing-a__ cold out...)????    I've got to be back and cleaned up and at the Myerson downtown by 7PM for a concert Terrie is conducting....

This is a great route, highly recommended.  The Forestburg Country Store makes a mean burger!  I did it back in Febuary, and will defintely be riding it sometime on 08.

Take Care,
Nelson.

Sorry to report that after our 31+ mile White Rock bike ride today ,the knee pain is 100x's worse today than at than at any point in the past. I'm disgusted. Back to Orthopedist Monday. I'm not going to be able to ride anytime soon.

Paul, thanks for the heads-up on the permanent. When the doctors can figure out what's going on with my right knee,I'll be able to ride again. Peggy might be able to ride(depending on her work schedule)the Celina route.

Oh crap. I knew I should have tried harder to discourage you from climbing those hills. In the big ring.

It won't keep you from drinking beer, I hope.

Nah,the flagpole hill was not the problem(I started feeling the pain along the trail head). No big ring for me. Flagpole hill was middle ring. Discourage me from drinking beer? How about the pain will only AID in my consumption of suds! See you in a few.

It combines Lake Ray Roberts with some great North Texas chipseal, hills from the Muenster ride, and a stretch of the FWBA Decatur ride where I bonked and dnf'd in March. What else could I ask for? I'm in.

Me too. I have no idea what's going other than after the drive home from White Rock Lake,I could not walk. It took 3-800mg Ibuprofen & 2-500 hydrocodone to mask the pain.

Steve, wow... I'm so sorry to hear of your setback.  What part of the knee hurts?  I had "lateral release" surgery earlier this year, and had to ride my DF for several months afterwards, including 4 months of PT to train my VMO muscle so the patella tracks correctly.

Greg - I rode this Perm with Nelson in February.  The store in Forestburg is worth a trip to the back of the store for a sit down burger.

I have designed, but not yet submitted my 1st perm that will start in Sanger, takes 455 to Forestburg.  Then north to St. Jo, up 677 to Spanish Fort.  Then head south to Nacona, Montague, Forestburg and back to Sanger.  It's about 210k.  Lots of climbing, and a real pretty route.  Look for it in early '08.

I'm freezing on the other side of the pond, but will return on the red eye in time to RIF 2 employees late this week, and ride in Italy on the 17th.

OK, Bud, I'll "announce" my plans to do the Caballo on the 25th to the LSR group, and we should get some other participants...  I'm going to request an 8:00AM start time, not 7:30.

OK, this one is a "go" -- 8AM start, planned 16+ average, typical cruising speed 17-20.  We will plan to stay together as a group, and finish in 9 hours or less total time -- because I've gotta be done by 5!!!

Please contact me directly if you want to join in.  You must be a RUSA member to participate....Please note that the start location is at Lantana Lodge at the west end of FM1192 about 2 miles west of Pilot Point.  Right at Lake Ray Roberts.

Yup, sounds like IT band  or torn ligaments.  I'll keep my fingers crossed for the first one, because cortisone and stretching will cure it.

Greg,I saw the Orthopedist on Monday(again) & he thinks the pain is a result from a torn meniscus and or IT band. I had an MRI today & will see the Ortho on Thursday to get the verdict.

I just may show up at the Pilot Point permanent to say "hey!"

The 200K Caballo de Simon RUSA Permanent will depart at
8AM sharp, on Sunday morning the 25th.  The start location is at
Lantana Lodge at the west end of FM1192 about 2 miles west of Pilot
Point., at Lake Ray Roberts. To get there from the D/FW area, take
US377 north to Pilot Point.  As you approach Pilot Point, take
Business 377 on your left and follow it to FM1192 in the center of
town.  Turn left on FM1192 and follow it 2 miles to Lantana Lodge.

Again, I'm going to try to keep a pretty good clip, getting back by 5PM at the latest.

C'mon FlyingLaZboy,as ride organizer I would think you could accommodate the other cyclists with decent weather(like no rain, lows in the 60's,highs in the 70's)!  Based on the forecast , I'll gladly sit this ride out. I'll be a warm-68 degree home buzzing through the Sunday Ticket NFL games, sitting on MY narrow a*%!

If I remember the elevation profile on this one correctly you're really steadily climbing until Forestburg, and it looks like your going to be heading straight into the wind.  We did a similar condition ride of the route back in Early March and it took awhile, but it was very sweet to have a long tailwind run back along the top of the Lake!

my journal entry for the day

127.40, 09:11:13, 13.87, 38.80
El Caballo de Simon 204K Permanent, 179 general: brevet - solo,  Bacchetta Corsa

Comments: Met Ray and Jeremy for another windy permanent. Spent the first 4 hours bucking a 20+ mph headwind. Very nice when we had it at our backs though. Pretty tough but beautiful day.
Weather Conditions: 37-53 Degrees 12-25 NNW all day pretty much, but a little lighter after 5pm.

Have Fun!
Nelson.

Of course, the ride is still 5 days away, and the forecast will change 5 times between now and then. Let's hope for decent weather.

Is anyone riding Friday? I was thinking about doing my winter ride, but starting from further away from the city.

It's not too late, but as of the moment, I'm planning on backing out of this little adventure...   With a forecase of 40 degrees and 60% chance of rain, I don't have the clothing for a 200K in that kind of weather.

I've announced to the LSR group that if anyone still wants to do it, I'll be there to provide cue sheets, signature cards, and waivers...  But I'm not riding.

Apologies,
Paul
