Casual RBM/WhiteRock Ride, Sat. Sept 22
Sep 14th, 2007, 8:57am

Bring out the trikes and fat tires!!!   Cheesy

I'd like to get a gang together next Saturday for a repeat of our "John Sadowski Route" casual-paced ride that we did a year ago...  It will start at RBM Richardson with an 8AM rollout, go over to Meandering Way southbound to the top of the White Rock Trail, head down the trail to the lake, go 'round the lake to the 7-11, then all the way back.   We should be at the top of the trail by 8:30, for anyone who wants to depart from there.   It's ~34 miles roundtrip from RBM, and ~24 miles from the top of the trail.

The intent is to do a casual pace most, if not all, of the way, with regrouping as needed.  If we get split up on the trail too much, the front group will just head back north for a while to make up for it, improvising...  Once we hit the lake, I would suggest we go around the WEST side of the lake (against traffic as such) and stay on Lawther, to avoid the typical runner/walker congestion on the paths.  We may break up for some speedwork if someone has the itch (Who, Me? Wink ), but will all meet at 7-11.

On the way back north, there will be an option to climb the Loving Hills section, and regroup at the top of the lake.

Keep in mind that the ride back north IS somewhat uphill, especially once you leave the top of the trail heading back to RBM...  So most of the climbing will be in the last 4 miles.

Lunch at Texadelphia afterward, in that same shopping center.

Paul

No, "CASUAL" generally means a calm 12-14, just out for a cruise...   SO, yes, not exactly lowracer-friendly pace!!!!!  We are purely out to enjoy the morning and the scenery -- and since we're all on recumbents, the only toned [insert preferred gender here] rear ends there will be to admire will be those of the roadies as they pass us...

...and (on the trail) we will just LET them pass us, confident in the knowledge that "They knoweth not who they are messing with...." However, John or Bud, would you please bring some pliers or Jaws of Life along, because we may have trouble getting Greg's fingertips unclenched from his handgrips at the end of the ride...   Grin Grin

One option for a faster group pace when we get to the lake is for that group to detour off and do the "Loving Hills" climbing section on the way to the 7-11, since we'll already be warmed up...  I'm leaning towards this concept...

Faster!! Faster!!! Faster!!! Actually, as Bud & I were discussing, a casual, slower paced ride before the TTT's is a good idea. Otherwise,I can see me blowing out a quad a week before the TTTT's.

There will have to be a slight modification to the route, because, as we discovered yesterday morning, the bridge at the park at the top of the trail is blocked for construction of some sort, with minimal way around it.  SO, we will arrive at that park by 8:30, do a quick bathroom stop if anyone needs it, pick up anyone starting there, then take a small detour.  On the way back north, we'll just take the service road over to Hillcrest north, briefly.

Wish I could make it, but wife having hysterectomy surgery the afternoon before so I'm sure I'll be needed elsewhere!  The one good thing about this is that she wants to get a better exercise program going when this is all over and wants to try out a bent!
BTW, Charlie had a reasonably bad crash while we were out last Tuesday, cause unknown, just going around a corner a little fast, no gravel or wet spots.  Skinned up legs and arm with a nicely bruised hip.  Otherwise bike and Charlie OK.

I really don't like expressway driving with that Nimbus on the rack, and could use more miles than that, too. I think I'd like to start closer to home and ride to the 8:30 park meet-up. Paul, give me a good route from DFW Airport to the park.

If any of you are planning on one last "fast endurance" ride prior to TTTT, let Nelson and I know.  While I'd like to ride with my newly found rbent family, we want to do a fast, race pace ride of at least 50 miles.

Of course, for those of you who know me, that means 14-16 mph.   Grin

Shouldn't matter much, we'll be going the opposite direction, and only on the West side.  If we run into issues, we'll adjust!!!!

OK, here's the reverse of the regular Airport Ride, basically.  This takes you from the Shell Station at the northeast corner, to the WHite Rock Trail point at Forest Lane, approximately 2 miles south of Valley View park.  It's 18 miles, and should take you roughly 90 minutes (traffic lights), so getting on the bike at 7AM is probably desirable.  Once you hit the trail, you can wait there (call me), or head north to meet us at 635.  If you're early, hit the Fourbucks there for some coffee!!!

Then might I suggest the GDB Airport Ride, departing Preston/Forest at 8AM sharp.  It's ~54 miles, consisting of 18 miles out there, an 18 mile fast loop, and 18 miles back.  Unless you're wanting 50 continuous fast miles, that is... then Argyle is better!  Ask for Mike Eipper, and tell him I sentcha...

I did my fast paced ride in Cleburne today on the TT course. 3 laps-1 fast paced at 20.2mph-59mins-2secs. There was a strong southwest wind(not to mention almost getting blown over by sand/gravel trucks several times). I checked my log, when we rode the course in early August-my fast time was 58mins-5 secs-20.6 mph.

I had mentioned 30 hours before, simply because the "course record" was set last year by the GDB Assassins, at around 26 hours...  And those were some strong riders. Now if halfway through Friday night, we look like we're threatening that, it will be a pleasant surprise...   We're in the "36 hour" time group overall, though.

I thought that since you had the V26 now, we were shooting for 25.5 hours.

Valley View Park. north of LBJ at Hillcrest, where the White Rock Trail begins, will be closed for about 3 months for a total remodeling.  The children's area will be moved, ball fields will be repositioned, etc.  The trail in the park will also be somewhat rerouted.  The trail bridge leaving the park to the south is CLOSED NOW.  Coming north, there is also a sign on the trail at LBJ.

If you drive to the trail head, you need to park south of LBJ, effective NOW.

Coming back northbound under 635, we will plan to go slightly west to Hillcrest and north one block back up to Valley View Lane.

I guess I've never paid much attention (since I've always started at Valley View, early in the morning before I'm fully awake).  Is there a place to park on the south side of LBJ?

I guess somewhere along the soccer fields and small park parking lots...???  I'll drive by there today to verify that parking is still available at VV Park, since we've already got a detour route mapped out.

If there is no parking at VV Park, head to one of the two parking lots shown in this photo, by getting to the eastbound access road from Hillcrest and turning south on Park Central Drive.

It turns out that parking's a moot question for me.  I came in to the thread late, since I didn't think my shoulder would be well enough to allow me to ride.  Upon reading the original post, I see that you're departing from the RBM parking lot.

PARKING LOT NOTICE!!!!

There is NO parking available at Valley View Park, except for the small lot at the west end.  The big lot is CLOSED!!

THEREFORE:

We will NOT meet at Valley View Park -- matter of fact, we won't even go PAST it -- the RBM group will just stay on Meandering Way the entire way south to the 635 service road....

We will plan to rendezvous with the ~20+ mile group at the second, smaller parking lot area south of 635 as shown in the photo a couple of posts up.  The larger (first) parking lot south of 635 will probably be filled with cars from soccer players.

The second parking lot may fill up, as well -- so if you're not riding from RBM, park WHEREVER YOU HAVE TO along Park Central Drive, and plan to meet the gang at that 2nd parking lot south of 635 at roughly 8:30-8:45.

I took Foo's remarks to mean that he was joining the ride at RBM.

That's my plan.

I haven't been on the bike since I got it back from the shop, so I need to take it out for at least a brief spin this evening.  The wrench seemed a little iffy about the rear wheel.  Assuming it's okay, and if my hip isn't killing me in the morning (starting to sound like the stereotypical 'bent rider), then I'll see you guys at RBM in the morning.

Baby steps, baby.  I'll want to see how long I can stand holding my right arm up, and then the moaning and gnashing of teeth over lost conditioning can commence.

You guys going to be doing the White Rock ride tomorrow, or are you training for the time trials?

I can't speak for the others, but I did my last hard ride Thursday night, and I'll be strictly doing recovery level rides until the TTTT start.

Good ride today, with casual parts and fast parts...  I think we created the usual "stir" as we went around the lake...

I enjoyed seeing Y'ALL at WRL today.  First time I was able to see Buds world famous Nimbus up close.  This black beast certainly sets the standard for winter beater bikes.  I hope to cherry-pick a good deal in the next two months on a Winter bike.   Im looking for a LWB.  Hopefully with dual big wheels.  Otherwise I will follow in Buds foot steps and convert the 20’ front wheel to 26’.

Sincerely,
Terry

I enjoyed the upright that could NOT keep up with Paul & I around White Rock Lake & as we slowed to meet up with everyone, the upright riders says "you guys are the fastest recumbents I've ever seen. You destroy the stero-type!" That felt good.

Most of all,I enjoyed see everyone again on the ride. Good times with good people.

By the time Greg and I got back to DFW Airport, I had 62.4 miles; that was a good addition to the ride. It was great seeing everyone, and we certainly got our share of looks as we pedaled by.

Mine was the group of parents and little kids along the side of the road, who ooo'ed and ahh'ed over the bikes as each of us passed. I felt like I was in a parade.

As always, I really enjoy riding and socializing with our group. Thanks to Foo and Peggy for stopping and assisting a blind guy with his flat! Note to all those with C02 devices. Unlike me you should become familiar with their operation before you actually have a flat. I could not make mine work. Foo's worked handily however.  Smiley Let's ride again soon.

Looks like I missed a good one.  I occassionally looked down from my wife's hospital room on to the trail but never looked at the right time as I never did see anyone.  Maybe I'll be able to make it next time.

OK, when's the next one?  After reading all of your comments and hearing a report from Richard, I am kicking myself for chosing to go to the gun show instead of the ride.  I won't miss the next one!

Yup.  By the time I knew it was you, you were gone.

BTW, how'd the Allen ride go yesterday?  I would have liked to join you, but it was my lovely bride's birthday and we were having dinner out.
