September 8 Recumbent Ride in Flower Mound
Aug 26th, 2007, 6:36pm

I would like to host an rbent ride in my hometown of Flower Mound on Saturday, September 8th, start time 8am.  Start location is the strip center where Bicycles Plus is located, on the SW corner of Long Prairie (aka 2499) and Flower Mound Rd (aka 3040).

For those who have not ridden in Flower Mound, there are a lot of great, paved roads, light traffic, and lots of hills.  This area is a mecca for DFW area cyclists.  I can easily ride 50-75 miles and unless by choice, not ride the same roads twice.

Nelson, Charlie and Robert have ridden with me and can attest to the great riding.  As a matter of fact, Nelson and I rode yesterday, and even though it was HHH, we saw 50-60 riders in a relatively short amount of time.

Personally, I'd like to ride 50 miles (or more) with as much climbing (or hill repeats) as possible.  Depending on the varied interest of potential rbent'ers, I could pre-design several different routes/distances/climbing.

As I type, my wife just volunteered to make "healthy" breakfast burritos,  Shocked
so please let me know if you'd like to join us.

Excellent, Ray!   I would suggest trying to plan out three routes -- one with "extra" hills as you describe, one of similar distance "without", and a shorter route for a casual group.

Ray:  I'll have to check the official calender, but to the best of my knowledge I should be able to make it.  It IS a great track and I'll definitely look forward to seeing those roads again.  Lots of DFs for the testosterone charged folks to chase down!  I am probably good for about 50 miles if there are places to stop a couple of times.  See you in a couple of weeks.

Awesome - I'll have to learn to design routes on bikely.com pretty quickly. I wanted to design a 200k Permanent anyway, so this is the perfect imputus to get me started.

p.s.  There is a 200k Lone Star Randonneur Brevet, leaving from Italy (Tx) this Saturday, 9-1-07 at 7:30am.  I'll be there, and from what I've been reading, it will be well represented.  Hope to see some of the rbent family there as well.

Have a great week everyone.

Ok everyone, I just designed my first route on bikely. It's a common 35 route ridden in the Flower Mound area by many bike clubs.  Not too many flat areas, and a steep climb of about 11% around mile 18.  See the elevation profile.  I hope this link works:
http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/Flower-Mound-Argyle-35-mile-loop

This route is what I intended on introducing for our September 8th ride.  Since I'm a newbie, please let me know if this is too short, too long, acceptable, etc...  Also, do I need to provide a turn-by-turn cue sheet?

I'll also design a longer route (50 miles or so) that goes west to Justin, and depending on the mileage, there are good roads to go even father west to Eagle Mountain.

Comments/suggestions are welcome.

Looks good, Ray. We have a wide variety of riders, so no matter what kind of route you lay out, someone will find it too long, too short, too hilly, too flat, etc. I say just pick a route you like, and lead it. Having a second distance can accommodate more riders, but then you have to recruit someone to lead that route.

My bout with bronchitis is gone and forgotten, so I'll have no excuse if I can't huff and puff myself up those hills.

Oops.  Had no sooner said I could come than I got a call about a meeting at church I pretty much have to be at (what kind of church has meetings at 7:30 AM on Saturdays anyway?!).  Possibly I can meet up with you somewhere along the way, but don't count on me being there.

Hi Everyone - well I modified the 35 mile route to create a 50 mile route.  The I saved the name of the file as "Flower Mound/Argyle 50 mile loop".  I assumed BIKELY would have created and saved the file as the new route, however, it replaced the 35 mile route with the 50 mile route and kept the original name.  So, the route is 50 miles now but the file name remained as it was.

I learned that I should have started from scratch to create the new route.  Now, time permitting, I'll create the original 35 mile route.

http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/Flower-Mound-Argyle-35-mile-loop

I'll drive the 50 mile route later today or tomorrow and create an Excel cue sheet.

Does anyone know how to change the name of a file in bikely?  I need to change the name since the name references 35 miles and it's now 50 miles.

Sorry for the confusion.  Unless the group that has responded wants to ride the 35 mile route, we'll be riding the 50 mile route next Saturday, 9-8, beginning at 8am.  As a reminder, my wife will make breakfast burritos, so I would appreciate anyone who hasn't responded, letting me know that you'll join.  My cel phone is 817-975-8638.

Have a great week everyone.

I"m pretty sure I'll be there, as well....  This route goes through some of the same sections from the Best of the Northwest ride we did back in June, that Bud and Greg came out on -- I see some sections I've been on before, when we started from Big Buck's...

My wife and I drove the route on Monday, so I could create a turn-by-turn cue sheet.  I haven't typed in in Excel yet, but will before the ride.  I'll also create a cue sheet for the 35 mile route.

If the people who will ride the shorter route would like it less than the approximate 35 mile route, please respond as soon as you can.  My wife may (Angie) ride this route as she doesn't ride fast, nor the distances that I do.

I'll plan on 10 people, since Angie is going to make breakfast burritos.

Have a great day everyone.

'preciate the work you're putting into this, Ray!!!

If you figure the 50 mile route might take us 3 hours or so to finish, there's certainly no reason that a slower 30+ mile group shouldn't be able to complete their route in similar time -- c'mon out, Dianna, and bring friends!!!!

Good morning everyone - I created the cue sheet for the 50 mile route last night and will bring copies Saturday morning.

I also just created a shortened version of this route, approximately 25 miles: Here's the link on bikely:
http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/Flower-Mound-Short-Loop

My wife, Angie, will ride the 25 mile route.  She averages 12-14mph, and hopes this isn't too slow for anyone wanting to ride the 25 mile route.  Don't hold this against her, but I've not yet converted her to a bent.

She is 5'2" - any recommendations from the peanut gallery on a bent that would fit her (since I'm relatively new as well)?

Rose is her height; she could try out Rose's Stratus, which would probably already be adjusted close. A Stratus is a very good bike for someone her size.  Unfortunately, Rose won't be there Saturday. She rarely takes a Saturday off work.

A medium-frame P-38 would also work pretty well, I would think.. That's what Lynn Morrow rides...

Thanks for the suggestions.  Other than my Bacchetta Aero, I don't know much about recumbents, and have never ridden another one.  Since Angie will come out and ride on Saturday, she'll begin to learn the differences.

My wife Alexis is 5'3" and likes the v-rex as well.  Hers is a medium frame though, and still needed the thinner pad to feel comfortable stopping with road shoes.

I'm coming for the 50 mile ride. I don't need a burrito but a cue sheet is important since we seem to have a very fast group on the 50 mile ride.

My wife Angie will lead the 25 mile group, though she hasn't be able to ride more than once a week, and will avg 12-14 mph.
http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/Flower-Mound-Short-Loop
I didn't create a cue sheet for the 25 mile group, though if that group sticks together, Angie knows that route well.

I will bring copies of the 50 mile cue sheet.

See ya all tomorrow.  We will bring breakfast burritos (relatively healthy) and bottled water.

Paul - the ride starts at 8am.  We will be there by 7:30am.  We will park across from Chilis, and will be in a silver Lexus SUV.  Our LBS, Bicycles Plus is a few doors down from Chilis and will be open by the time we finish, in case anyone needs anything.

I'd like to thank those who came out to Flower Mound yesterday.

Dianna (sp?) was gracious enough to bring an extra bike so my wife could experience "going bent".  They drove to the High School and rode together.  Angie really liked it, even thought a blow torch couldn't get the pedals off the EZ-1.  Smiley

The rest of us rode a 50 mile route:  Ken, Steve, Peggy, Greg, Bud, Paul, and myself. Hopefully I didnt' miss anyone.  As Greg continually reminded me... We need to ride this route again, though going the opposite directions as at least 100 roadies in various size groups wizzed by in the opposite direction.  The one time a racing team was going the same directions as we did, and as we approached a 3/4 mile climb at 7-8% my chain got jammed in my rear derailurer and I had to stop  cry

Paul took some pictures and I can't wait to see them.  One was with some horses were laying down, looking paralyzed.

Dianna and Angie finished before the rest of us, so Dianna missed the great laughs at Chilis.  Oh, did I mention a secret huddle where the "Reclining Flyers TTT Team" discussed strategy and made sure I couldnt' hear.  Little did they know that 20 years of ear piercing rock concerts have destroyed my hearing  Wink

One final thought; while I really enjoyed "trying to ride" with everyone, I am very worried about TTTT.  These guys (oops, and Ms. Strada177 too) are so incredibly fast, I couldn't  keep close to them if they all rode in their small chain ring.

Looking forward to chasing down the roadies next time!!!!!

Sorry I missed riding with you folks!  I was thinking longly of the nice Flower Mound roads and good bent company while I struggled with couches, a piano, and assorted other heavy furniture while moving my inlaws.  Pretty sore today, especially as it took a couple more van fulls of moving this afternoon, but looking forward to next weekends brevets out of Cleburne, and seeing you guys at the TTTT.

Oh yeah - loved the ride.  Nice distance, nice scenery, plenty of rabbits to chase (the two-wheeled kind), and great company.  Nice hills to tackle to really get the heart rate going, and some smooth downhills as well that you can really crank up the speed on.  Good curves to lay the bike down and power through.  No gravel to skid you out, and few holes in the road.  In short - a perfect route.

It was good to meet and see everyone yesterday and sorry about the pedals on the EZ.  However, when we got back to the High School, Angie rode the V-Rex and I think that is her preference. She seemed to like the short wheel base better.   Thanks for putting together the ride.

Ray,thank you for a well organized ride. It was nice to meet you & Angie. As always with group rides,I enjoy the food/drinks as much as the ride themselves. Good times with good people. No worries about the "secret huddle". We were discussing what food would be easiest to prepare at the campsite. darn, now the secret is out.

And as far as keeping up with us(Recliners)...there were a couple of times when you blew by me like I was stanidng still. You have the trump card regarding the TTTT-EXPERIENCE!!

note to Steve and Peggy:  Since your fellow "performance laiden" (ha, like that word 'laiden') rbent family are members of Lone Star Randonneurs, and are participating in ultra cycling events, we need you both to participate.

Have a great week everyone, and I look forward to riding together soon.

Here are my pics....   I didn't get the horses, unfortunately.    And Greg, naughty, naughty!!!

It seems to me that Ken needs to move his seat forward an inch or so -- the photos show his leg stretched out straight at extension, but isn't that a bit too far?  What say ye, Bacchetta peoples???

Well, if you want to criticize, it looks like Ken's handlebars should be a foot lower, too.

Was the camera dragging the pavement when you took that shot of Greg?  Nice photos.

And nice ride, Ray. Thanks!

Ok..when/where(as long as the events are after the TTTT's)are the events? Count the "Stradas" in!!! Yeah, I'm kinda fond of the word "laiden" as well.

Greg,Peggy got a clean bill of health from the "doc",so she has no excuses of not riding the 100 miles at the TTTT's. Hold her to that $150 bet!!

Yep,I would move the seat forward about an inch or so for starters(IMO).  And Greg needs to lower his middle finger an inch or so!!
Great shot Greg!

Thanks for the picx Paul. I agree, #20 is awesome.  You're a multi-skilled, multi-tasking, hmm multi-iconiclastic, multi-laiden (I couldn't resist) cyclist.

Steve, for upcoming events, go to http://lonestarrandon.tripod.com/
and click on 2007 Brevet Schedule.  These are only the "scheduled" events.

Any member can choose from an existing route, from 100k-1000k.

Here's a link from the RUSA (Randonneur USA) site:
http://www.rusa.org/cgi-bin/permsearch_GF.pl
Pick "TX" in the state drop down, and sort by distance.  This will show you all the available rides by distance in the state.  Persoanly, I do at least one 200k per month.  In April I completed my 12 consecutive months of at least one 200k per month.  I received a very nice/engraved medal for my efforts.  Nelson Ralls rode most of them with me, and can attest to many an epic ride.

Steve,

Let's get together after TTTT and discuss ultra cycling.  We're getting more and more bents as participating members.  This Saturday, Nelson Ralls and I will take our bents up to Sanger, and test a new 200k route we're designing.  Once we work out the fine details, it will be sumbitted for approval.  Once approved, it will be added to the long list of approved routes in the north texas area.
