Official Reclining Flyers TTTT 4 Man Team thread
Jul 25th, 2007, 10:13pm

Well, we seem to have finalized the first rbent team for this year's TTTT. It is a yet to be titled 4 man recumbent team for the Tejas 500. Team members are Greg (aikigreg), Paul (FlyingLaZBoy), Steve (Strada177), and me.

I'm not sure if the four of us should vote on the team name, or maybe we should just have a poll here and let the forum choose the team's name. The race is just over two months away, so we have time to work out all the race details and strategy, as well as steering our training toward this event.

A 500 mile relay race that runs right through the night on a not-so-easy course is no small undertaking. Wish us luck, everyone, and I hope we're joined by more rbent teams in the TTTT (there are shorter events for those less than enthusiastic about a 36 hour race; the 100 mile race is something many here could do). Those of us on the team should read through the race rules a few times to make sure we understand everything.

There is much for us to cuss and discuss between now and September 28th, so here's a place for us to do it.

Don't want to hijack your thread, but we have a partially bent team with Dennis Cook, Jeremy Davis, Ray Torrey and myself.  We're going with Cole Miners as team name in honor of our missing team member Gary Cole who passed away a few weeks ago.  This is a return of our Fleche team minus Gary who will be guiding us in spirit.  I plan to ride the Corsa right now, and Ray will be on his Aero part of the time at least.  We're planning to start at the Thursday 6pm time and hopefully be through well before the Awards ceremony, but I look forward to the camaraderie of my fellow benters and friends, and a little helpful competition doesn't hurt either.  Good Luck! and I'm looking forward to the race.

Take Care,
Nelson.

Oh, wise guy!!!!  (kidding, Nelson)

Welcome, Steve, didn't know you were really considering it vs. riding with the Ms...  Again, I say, Welcome Aboard!   When should we plan to go back down there to introduce Steve to the course?  (or is he doing Goatneck this weekend?)

I still like the Flying Recliners for a team name...  or vice versa, the Reclining Flyers  Smiley

Nelson, is your "partially bent" team a 4-man 500 mile group, or do you have two sets of two man teams doing the 200?  I'm confused...

We're doing the 4 man 500 mile, with the 48 hour start (conservative!)  We are hoping for a Sub 30hr time though.  Two of our riders are DF only.  Ray and I switch hit as it were, but I was planning on using the Corsa exclusively, although I may throw the Lemond in the van as a backup bike.  I think Ray was going to possibly ride his Seven during the night since it has his generator hub mounted.  Dan seemed to think it would be OK to do this although where we end up classified is a bit unclear.

Back in April we four with Gary attempted to do a Fleche from San Angelo to Grand Prarie, but ended up riding for 11 hours into a screaming cold sleet laden headwind that saw our downhill forward progress drop into the single digit range.  We ended up abandoning the attempt in Comanche.

Reclining Flyers heh, of course you could set your selves apart from, and show that you have a Low, High, and Long Racer with the name "Fully Bent" to our "Partially Bent".  I think we're sticking with Cole Miners though.

Take Care,
Nelson.

The second, I think.

I made myself grin with "Barking Loungers" (as in "barking mad" and a play on "Barcalounger"), but it's taking the long way 'round for a weak pun.

Just hope there aren't any Brits in the vicinity.  I didn't know it until Mrs. Strada told me, but it seems "bent" is slang for "homosexual", over on the other side of the pond.  Which makes my motto, "GET BENT: Lie back. Ride hard.  Grin like a monkey." a bit... ehm... odd sounding.

A mix of recumbent and upright.......... hmmm, it will be interesting to see how Dan classifies that. Anyone else thinking about riding the TTTT, too?

Paul...I'm registered for the Goatneck,BUT I have might have a family conflict. Right now,I'm 50/50 for this Saturday. I have done the Goatneck once before(last year). There are some good climbs.

Here's a thought for the team name Blood,Sweat & Rears...(word play on the band Blood Sweat & Tears),or not!!!

I like Reclining FLyers or Low High and Long the best.  this is likely my last post for a while - I'll be out of pocket mostly until the 10th of Aug or thereabouts.   I'll post pictures of the Bourbon Trail Alexis and I rode when we get back.  Have fun!

There is no online registration, so we just need to each mail in a check with a filled out registration form and signed waiver. They can be downloaded here. There is a line on the registration form for you to enter the team name. Just enter Reclining Flyers on that line; that will let Dan match our entries.

Have you checked about sponsorship possibilities, Paul? What about jerseys?

I haven't checked on any sponsorship or jersey aspects.  I mentioned to Rick at Plano that we were trying to form a 'bent TTTT group, and he liked the idea.

Steve, who exactly is "Thingy Sporting Goods"?????   Grin Cheesy

As for jerseys, it could be fun to come up with some new design, but the $150 fee kinda blows my cycling budget for the month of September, and August is already gone towards the Randonneurs of China jersey I'm getting from SloJoeRecumbo...   Sad Smiley

OK, my application is filled out and ready to send in...

Paul, Steve didn't write "thingy", that's the censored version that the forum is showing you. That would be D - I - C - K - S Sporting Goods.

The $150 ain't helping my budget, either. That's why some sponsorship would be nice.

Shall we attempt to do another Cleburne TTTT course ride on Saturday, August 11th?  8AM departure.  Plan for three loops minimum?  Will Greg be in town?   I don't want to do this much closer to HHH...

If I could talk Nelson, and the rest of my team into it, possibly we could meet at the course for a little friendly competition. Oh, say 200-300 miles.  One of our team members (Dennis Cook) lives in San Angelo, so it might be difficult. The loosers could either sponsor the winners (ha), bring the beer, or something enticing.

Since our TTTT team will be mixed (bents/DF), a new category has been developed.  It's called the bi-bikers category.

Good news is that everyone completing the 500 mile race receives the same cool trophy as the first place rider/team.  We're going to rent an RV for TTTT.  Looking forward to a great event.

I don't think Greg will be back until a week later than that. With him gone and Steve not sure if he can make it, maybe we should postpone until the week after HHH (that is Labor Day weekend).

OK, Greg's back -- we're on for the Cleburne TTTT course ride again, 7:30 (yawn) departure from the church site on Park Road 21.  Same plan of attack as before, 1st lap moderate/whatever for familiarization, 2nd lap "for time", 3rd lap negotiable, and so on?  Steve, if your personal situation holds fast, we'll see you there.

If any of you other folks want to make the drive all the way down there and are in need of a hill climbing and fast downhill fix, you're certainly welcome.  From north Dallas, it's about a 90 minute / 90 mile trip one way...

Yes, I stopped by after our last ride there. It's a beautiful state park and the campsites look very nice. We'll have electricity and showers. I'll be going down that Thursday night, and grabbing a site as close to the showers as I can get. It looks like I'll be able to borrow my sister-in-law's popup camper, so that will be a good place to nap between laps.

Beautiful!!!  Sounds like an excellent reason for a camping trip, Thursday into Saturday!!!  All participants should purchase a State Park pass ahead of time...

http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/spdest/parkinfo/passes/parkpass/faqs/

Given that the 36 hour 500 mile version starts at 6AM, we'll be up early on Friday, for sure...

All that's needed is one state park pass per vehicle. I have one for mine.

I hadn't noticed that the race starts at 6:00 am this year. I seem to recall it being 5:00 am last year.

The application was a little confusing. There was no specific division for 4 man recumbent team. Oh well, let them try & keep me from riding because I filled out the application incorrectly in ONE place.

Paul

The park pass can be obtained by calling 512 389 8900.  They send you a temporary card in 10-15 business days, and a permanent card in ~60 days.

I'm thinking that we'll also want to have a tent/overhead "base" set up at the Church site, as well as the main "retreat" at the State Park.   This will give us a place to keep supplies, etc., as well.

I have an extra tent and an overhead 16x16 canopy that I'll set up for us, complete with some sort of appropriate signage...   Otherwise, anyone hanging out and/or crewing or just waiting their lap turn may not have any shade/shelter available, and that would be bad...

Nice looking team logo, Paul, but I think we need to change our name to Bronchitis Brothers.

Also, those state park passes can be bought at any state park, including the ones at Ray Roberts and Joe Pool.

I"ve got a dry-erase board with it drawn up on, but it would be cool to have a white bedsheet or something with it painted on... LOL

From the GDB discussion board as of Sept 12:

There are only about 40 people registered which leaves a lot of trophies and medals to be won. You don't have to ride 500 miles...there are other distances and time intervals and there are also age group divisions to race in as well. Or, you could configure a team (all male, all female, or mixed) and go for trophy or medal that way. Lots of ways to win and have fun and it'll be a weekend you never forget.

Speaking of the GDB forum..........

Has anyone there considered letting non-members participate? I kind of run out of budget before I join every single cycling organization in the area, so the clubs I belong to are the ones that start more rides near my Arlington location, but I would like to be able to read the GDB forum.

And she thinks she isn't ready?!!  I've told her several times "you can do this easily!"  She doesn't give herself credit for being a strong rider.

Thanks to Barry, I've spent the weekend experimenting with riding the RANS V26, which is the other bike I was considering when I purchased the SXP...

It's a bit more aerodynamic, with the pedals up higher, and the frame is aluminum, a bit stiffer.  A year and a half ago, I wasn't comfortable enough with this higher pedal position.

After putting it through its paces over 100+ miles this weekend, and talking more with Barry, we've agreed that we're going to trade steeds for a couple weeks, and I'll be riding the V26 for the TTTT.  It's definitely a bit faster, and also a better climber...  It weighs basically the same, but I think it's worth it!!!

That'll be cool for the race, but I'd think of a lighter bike if I was going to trade up.  Having ridden bikes of basically the same shape but different weights, I can't tell you how much easier it is to climb with the tica than the baron.

In other random thoughts, I wanted to stress that with the night riding and such we'll be doing, don't try to kill yourselves guys.  I would rather we were much slower on those turns and hills than get risky!

Also, Have we finalized who is bringing what?  I'm volunteering to bring a camp stove and food.  Alexis can whip up a great healthy whole wheat pasta and sauce dish - anybody have a problem with turkey meat in the sauce, or allergic to certain veggies?  Also she can make a fairly low-gi sweet potato whole wheat pancake that's great with fruit and yogurt and honey on it.  I'm also going to bring some monster-type drinks for us and my large cooler.

Has anyone got an extra tent to bring along?  Also, has anyone messed around with creating a "schedule" for lap orders and car pick-ups?

Paul, I have an extra reflective vest if you need one, and a single ankle band, as well as a bunch of relfective stickers for anyone who needs them for their helmet or bike.

I've got a terracycle mount coming for my bike asap, so hopefully I'll know by Saturday if the tica will work for night-riding or not.  I might drive out there and ride the route at 4am one morning or something to test everything out there and how comfortable I feel, since it's near work anyway.

I would consider that, but nobody around here owns a Ti version that I'm aware of, and I wouldn't be so bold to ask...   Smiley  Additionally, my legs felt pretty good this weekend, despite the pedal position change.  But I'm also going to ride it over the next couple weeks for more acclimatization...

That food sounds great!!!!   Terrie and I will figure out something and post later.

I'm bringing two tents, one for the campsite, one for "base camp" at the start area, that Nelson is going to put a tarp down for to hold the spot.  Lynn Morrow is creating our banner...

I think I'm OK on reflective stuff...  thanks!

In the Bacchetta forum, John Schlitter says he has mailed his entry for the 36 hour 500 mile race, but Sara K is not going to be there. So, there probably won't be even one female recumbent rider in the entire event, unless...........

All good points & another reason maybe a "Recliners" meeting after the Whiterock lake ride on Saturday might be a good thing.

Paul-nice ride. You'll be our speed/hill climber with that new ride. Congrats.
