Saturday lunch ride to Sherman
May 19th, 2007, 12:31am

OK here's the plan so far:

Second weekend of June, the 9th, we meet at Parker Road Station and leave at 0800. Ride north on TX 5 for about 45 miles (actually it's 46 up and a shade over 44 back because of having to use an underpass on 75 to get to the nursing home). We have to get there by 1230 for lunch, so no lolly gagging. There will be a brief stop in McKinney, for whatever, and another in Van Alstyne. Under no circumstances is anyone to spend any money in Anna!

The roads get wrinkly near Sherman, so we will get some altitude gain on this ride.

I need to know how many people to expect by June 2nd, so we can get some build-up of excitement at the home, and so I can tell the people how many extra lunches to fix.

For as many miles as there are on this ride it's pretty easy to do, I have done it several times. It was one of the first city-to-city rides I ever did after my wreck.

Doesn't anybody want to go brighten up some old folks lives, and get a free lunch? If I tell the people at the nursing home that I'm the only one coming up, they are going to be so disappointed... {/jewish mother mode} Grin

I've been interested in an Opus Tour.  Are you flexible about what weekend to ride?

For this ride it's not a case on if I'm flexible, it's the nursing home. If it's just a couple or three people coming I need to give them 24 hour notice. Large groups require longer lead times, more than about 4 would require a week lead time. Opus

[shaking Magic 8-Ball]  Hrm.  "Cannot Predict Now."  I guess that's about par, since I'm rarely able to plan anything more than a week in advance.

Just out of curiosity, what sort of entertainment have you promised the folks at the nursing home?  Or do they reckon that a smallish pack of middle-aged humans wearing colorful lycra provides amusement enough?

Warm bodies with minds and pulses would be ample. Just having somebody there to acknowledge their existance would go a long way to boosting their morale. Having cyclists there to say "You guys are worth riding almost 100 miles to see" woule be wonderful for most of them. I have been thinking, there are a bunch of nursing homes within a few miles of my house here in Garland, maybe I should organise a shorter ride to one of them? For another day, perhaps.

At the moment, count me in...  Sounds like a pleasant way to spend a Saturday and get into some new scenery...

How much is lunch?  Or are we getting treated to lunch as guests?   There is a couple of competing events that weekend.  The FWBA picnic, and a pay ride called The Collin Classic are both on June 9TH.   Since Every weekend in June has a major event, I cant see any reason to switch the date.  Because its going to compete with something.  And I have s desire to do a self-directed tour such as this. So Im thinking serious about this.  I will make a decision by your June 2nd cutoff.  Smiley  I usually don’t commit to a pay-tour until the actual day and I end up paying the late-registration fee.  BUT this isn’t a pay-ride so I know you need to organize it in advance so I will plan ahead for Opus.

Lunch will be free for the riders, support peple will have to pay a minimal fee, I think $2 was mentioned, but I'll have to verify that. So if you have someone SAG for you, somebody will have to pony up $2 (maybe) but I'll still have to know by the second how many people are coming. I guess I'll need to know how many are riding and how many are driving by then as well

Looks like I'm good for the Sherman trip, unless work winds up interfering as of midweek.  Terrie was wondering if there were any small items (toiletries, books/CDs/whatnot) that we could take along as giveaways to others there....   Thoughts?

So, is that just one or two riders (you and Terrie?). And anyone else thinking of going? I have to call the nursing home tomorrow morning and give them a number of extra lunches to make.

Oh and anything you want to send up (beside Gangsta Rap CDs) will be appreciated.
