DESERT CAMP HISTORIC HOTELS - 24FEB to 01MAR2019
Mar 12th, 2019, 2:55pm

24-Feb-19      SUN -       HT1 Tucson to Tubac ↑10% → steepest climb
After Friday's snow storm which blanketed much of Southern Arizona, we enjoyed beautiful views of snowy mountains all day long and for the next several days. The temperature was cooler than normal but the sun was shining, making for a beautiful ride. There was more climbing than descending so our start elevation of 2400 ft  became about 3200 ft by the time we reached Tubac. There wasn't much in the way of serious climbing although I did see 10% at one point. Most of the climbing was big ring climbing making this one of the easiest days. That 10% was merely a taste of things to come.

25-Feb-19      MON -       HT2 Tubac to Patagonia ↑15% →steepest climb of the day
Today's net climbing brought us to 4000 ft elevation in Patagonia, where there was widespread snow cover, 3 days after the big snow storm. This area got about a foot of snow. The swimming pool at our hotel still had a sheet of ice over the top and the decking around the pool today had the snow piled around the edge, even though it was very unlikely anyone would be using the pool. Our net climb of 800 ft was mostly easy, much of which was again big ring climbing. But the continued climbing was a little test of my ability to acclimate to the higher elevation. My max speed of 51 mph (82 kph) set a new record for me, eclipsing last year's record of 48 mph. There were long, fairly steep descents which, if one didn't touch the brake, facilitated new records. Fortunately, there wasn't much wind, the pavement pretty smooth, and the traffic light. The steepest climb today was 15%.

26-Feb-19      TUE -       HT3 Patagonia to Tombstone ↑16% →steepest grade for the day
This was another net climbing day, starting with a 12 mile climb to Sonoita, which brought us to 4800 ft and even more widespread snow cover. There were still piles from when the road had been plowed and the cover over the flat prairie was still a few inches. After that initial climb, we had several miles of rollers which inched us up over 5000 ft before a long, gentle descent to Whetstone and beyond Whestone, heading east, toward Tombstone. A few miles before Tombstone, we bottomed out at the San Pedro River and our lunch stop was near that point as well. From there to Tombstone was mostly gentle climbing interspered with a few sharper climbs and some final brief climbing of 7 to 9%. But the steepest was reserved for the driveway up to the hotel, which was at least 16%. It was definitely  harder than the 15% hill we'd done a couple days earlier. Unfortunately I didn't check the gradient - I was in too much shock from the view of what appeared to be a vertical climb and hastily shifting to my lowest gear. Today I was to meet up with friends who live near the Chiricahua Mountains, about 50 miles to the east. They needed to drive to the County Seat of Bisbee to pay their property tax so meeting up with me was a good excuse to take care of the tax that day.

27-Feb-19      WED -       HT4 Tombstone to Bisbee ↑8% →steepest grade for the day
Today's destination was Bisbee, the highest elevation of any town we would reach this week, at over 5500 ft (we stayed at the Copper Queen Hotel which is at 5300 ft and that had a bearing on how much initial climbing we had in the morning). Unfortunately, I never made it. Just shy of 15 miles along, my chain broke. It sounded like a clap of thunder right next to me but I knew exactly what it was and I immediately clamped down on the brake and set it. I was on an uphill and pedaling in my small ring. I clambered out and moved the velo onto the gravel shoulder, and rolled it forward to a wider flat shoulder. The van was still behind me and it would need a wider space to pull off the road. About 10 min later the van approached and I waved it down. We loaded up my velo and away we went to the first rest stop, passing Doug along the way. When Doug rolled in, he thought he could have me back on the road in half an hour. But there were complications and it dragged on to about an hour. Looked like I'd have to forfeit the rest of the ride. I sagged to Bisbee at that point. Doug was just coming in and after lunch I helped Doug for more than three hours sorting out the issue with the chain. But, by the end of day, it was buttoned up and ready to go the next morning. So I missed out on the final 33 miles of the ride. Hate when that happens. I do these rides because I like a challenge, most of the time. But never fear, the next day would offer up an even bigger challenge!

28-Feb-19      THU -       HT5 Bisbee to Benson (K Caverns) ↑11% →steepest climb of the day
The day started with a 700 ft climb in the first 3 miles, topping out at the top of Mule Pass, over 6000 ft elevation. The gradient wasn't bad for the first 2 miles of that climb but averaged 7 to 10% in the last mile. The downhill side was nearly as steep and I couldn't let it go for the next 3 miles, riding the brake for much of it. I stopped when it leveled out to let the brakes cool. Even with the heat sink in the wheel, they were hot. After a few minutes I got going again with the road a little flatter and some rises here and there to naturally slow me. There was a series of long climbs on the way back to Tombstone followed by a sharp high speed descent where I reached my fastest speed of the day at 54 mph / 87 kph (a new record maximum speed on the velo). From Tombstone it was generally downhill to the San Pedro River followed by a mild climb for most of the next 30 miles. This included a stop for lunch at Karchner Caverns State Park followed by a tour of the caverns. This stop was about 2 hours long. Finally I finished the last few miles of the climb ending at the hotel with about 5 final miles of downhill including waiting on a slow moving train for about 15 minutes. Our destination hotel was in Benson, just the other side of Interstate 10.

1-Mar-19      FRI -       HT6 Benson to Tucson ↑11% →steepest climb of the day
This was an easy day compared to the last few (aside from the 0.2 mile 10% grade leaving Benson - I actually saw 11% for about half of it). 20% of the ride was on the interstate shoulder. Then we had another 10 miles or so of very rough road paralleling the interstate - lots of cracks and pot holes on very old pavement and lots of steep rollers. After that, the pavement got a lot better for several more miles until we reached the portion of the Tucson Loop Trail system for non-motorized vehicles we would be riding. That was ultra-smooth, no traffic riding - the best of the trip. Finally reached the final miles of roadway back to the start hotel which concluded this 6-day Historical Hotels tour. I hadn't done this one before. My takeaway is that it was surprisingly challenging despite the relatively short mileage days.
