So I was on my commute ride on the way home this evening when something new happened. I was riding in the right lane of a little used road when somebody in an SUV came up from behind me. It's a 4 lane road and they were never in the lane behind me, so they were in no way inconvenienced by my presence on the road. Anyway, they were going pretty slow, then sped up and as they passed by me, the jackass threw a beer at me. Missed me by a good 8 feet, high and in front of me, but I got spattered by some foam and it landed with a loud splat. I think he wasted a mostly full beer. Happily he missed, and happily he didn't circle around for another try, but sheesh! Getting clocked in the head by a 3/4 lb beer doing 30mph could actually kill a guy. So the best reason for a recumbent rider to wear a helmet on the road is still for the modicum of protection it affords if you get hit by a car. But another reason is to protect you noggin from flying beers.
