Bessie's Creek
Apr 10th, 2015, 9:43pm

Well, I'm about to turn in.  So far there is one bent doing the 511 Mile race solo.  Allen, on an Encore. There are none on the 24 hour for the first time I can think of.  Dan is a no show.  With the initial weather outlook, I can't blame him.  There are four of us on the 12.  Me, Reever, Rubin Randel, and Beth Rawls.  As far as I know, none doing the six hour.

At the moment it looks like the night will be dry, into the first couple hours of the race.  Then the chance for rain comes pretty high.  I'm ready either way.  It's rained off and on all day and it's quite cool.  Reever is looking lean and mean.

I'm going to attempt to do what I've never done:  pace myself and follow the plan. Grin. I've done 500 Mile races as a team, and 24 hour rides and races, but never a 12, oddly enough.  I think it's going to be fun.

I had a sudden bout of illness at the dinner and did not stay for official results.  Had basically zero time off the bike until mile 120.  Hit the century mark right at 5 hours 5 minutes.  And then soon add I sit down for a well deserved break, Reever passes me like it's nothing!  He was on fire, in spite of a driver causing him to tumble in the first lap.

Had more off bike time here and there, but not much.  Just enough to switch off the Carbent and the M5, stretch out muscles, and such.  Second century was 10 hours 26 minutes bike time.  Official results will likely be 225-230.  I roughly calculated 220 but Garmin died and I had to finish with Strava on the phone.

I'm pooped.

As usual, Greg is too modest. The guy was out of the pack like a bullet. I never saw him until he decided to change bikes after the 100 mile mark. He had blown a tire on his M5 before the race even began. I had been taking in enough (maybe too much) water), so I decided to pass up a pit stop.
Greg changed over to his M5 and went past me like the proverbial hot knife through butter. He may have put 7-10 miles on me in one 21 mile loop.
I had tire trouble on my third to last and second to last laps. I had to stop to air up my tire twice on the third to last lap, changed tubes at the truck, and then had to add more air on my second to last lap to get me home again. Johnny from team Vite actually changed my back tire for me TWICE--thanks Johnny!!! I used my last (third) tube and put on a Schwalbe tire that was too big to fit in my brakes. So he changed it back to my Gatorskin. It took forever! I was amazed that even after all those miles the Musashi allowed my legs to push out some of my better miles on my last laps when I had adequate air in my tires. I love recumbents!!!!!!

Adults should have fun so kids will want to grow up!

For every mile of road there's two miles of ditch.

I'd rather be sorry for something I did than for something I didn't do.

Not at all!  If you hadn't been cooking hot right on my tail, I never would have pushed as hard as I did at the end.  I had no idea you'd already had a spill and dealt with all that tire stuff.

Here;s my ride.  Garmin nuts off 3/4 of the way through my last lap.  I finished that lap which makes me at 213 miles.  I had about a half hour left so I rode a prorated lap.  Should end up getting credited with somewhere north of 220.  If you look at the power data I intended to ride with a normalized power of 150 for all 12 hours.  You can see where heart rate and power start falling off dramatically - that's when it survival time!

Also, if you're curious I rode the carbent for laps 1 and 2, and 5 and 6.  Rode the M5 the rest of the time.

That's fine Paul. I found out later that the accident was back in February.  JS had just posted a pic of him, and I saw the comment about the crash and did not notice when...

I reposted and complained about a DMN article that, had I paid attention, was four years old.

As usual, the thing I enjoyed the most was associating with riders I'd met like Greg and Alexis and meeting some new folks like Ruben, Beth, and Johnny from team Vite. Riding recumbents out here in the wilderness of Abilene is a lonely venture.
