GPS and the Phone
Dec 19th, 2014, 10:13am

I came across this article this morning and thought i would share.  Realizing not everyone uses a GPS while riding and some may use a phone and others just kinda ride want they want.  This article was posted by a fellow randonneur who uses the phone as a backup in the event he becomes lost and has no cell service.

One thing about using phones with GPS is they do require cellular signals (and  wifi)  to maintain accuracy ..   There are a lot of aftermarket GPS systems that communicate via bluetooth and resolve this issue allowing very accurate samples and preserving battery life on the phone as well because they take the burden of the GPS radios out of the device.      Pilots, Boats and backpackers tend to use them as well as anyone who isn't always "on-net"

I use this one: http://www.amazon.com/Dual-Electronics-XGPS-160-Receiver/dp/B00E65TNYE/ref=sr_1_ 1?s=gps&ie=UTF8&qid=1419132327&sr=1-1 which has a longer run time than my iPhone and can get near-inch accuracy.  (Especially better runtime since i upgrade to IOS 8)

Don't have either a dedicated route navigation device or a smart phone. This: http://www.optics4birding.com/bushnell-backtrack-gps-green.html?gclid=COP7hZmd1s ICFcOGaQod4yoADQ gets me back to the mothership, if I drop out of a ride in unfamiliar territory or get lost.
