2014 Heart of Texas Recumbent Rall February 22-23
May 29th, 2013, 8:49am

Starting to get everything in stone for the 2014 HOT. Working with The Habitat to get the room block set up. Once that is done, be sure and reserve your room. You can always cancel your reservation if things come up, but some Hotties were "out in the cold" when they tried to secure their room late. All gone.

The 2014 HOT will be also be Continuing Education school! We are working on "classes" to be held for all levels of riders. Of course we will have Recumbent 101 for basic maintenance, care and troubleshooting. What are some ideas for the advanced classes? Increasing speed? I am NOT an advanced rider, so I am clueless as to what would be desirable for the advanced riders.

Friday is shaping up to be our Meet and Greet day. Bring your lawn chairs (or your trike if you have one) to hang out at Easy Street and visit, look things over, and maybe venture out into the 'hood for some riding for the curiosity seekers among us. Do y'all want another "Swap Meet"? Friday would be a good day to have that! Trying to talk Mike into another one of his great killer garage sales as well. I am SO PISSED that the neat things were gone by the time I got to it at the last HOT! Arm coolers, neat lights, grrrrrrr.......

The poles at the 2013 HOT Recumbent Rodeo kind of took a beating. But I purchased new containers and will have them restored to their natural beauty! ha! Mike Kelley, Andy Baker, Mike Librik, and Eddie Dragna  (winners of the 2013 HOT Rodeo events) - y'all have Targets on your chests now. I suspect there will be some secret training sessions being done by the rodeo participants for the 2014 Rodeo! CAN'T WAIT for the Second Annual HOT Rodeo!!!! Bring your whistles, noisemakers, pom poms -- whatever to whoop it up for the contestants!!!

Remember: drop your cycle manufacturer a line and tell them you would like to see them come to the 2014 HOT. Most all of their websites have a "contact us" section. Go there and follow the steps to rattle their cages! Smiley

Heard from the "Videographer of the Recumbent Stars" (Steve Erickson). The video of the 2013 HOT is in the last stages of completion now! Going to be two videos - one of Friday and Saturday, and one of the HOT Rodeo! I wish we all lived close and we could have a "Screening Party" to watch it together!!!! I will keep y'all posted when the debut will be!

If you know some one who wants to start following the 2014 HOT, please give them this Facebook address (https://www.facebook.com/events/242921569184774/?fref=ts0.
The HOT web site is www.hotrally.org, but we have not started developing that just yet. I just could not get into that Tweeting. But please spread the word that the Facebook page is the best source for the late breaking HOT news.

Y'all holler at me with any questions, thoughts, comments. Holler at Mike with complaints Smiley

Whoa, are you kidding?!  What a great idea.
There should be a Rules of the Road class, perhaps taking note of the various communities each of the attendants is coming from.
Perhaps a class on paceline rules, as adapted to recumbent bikes and trikes.  Included: "Does there really have to be any speech at all during a ride, or are hand signals enough?"

Great suggestions!!  My paceline rules are pretty short:
1) Hang on the back and let uprights who want to join in front of you, not behind.  After having ridden upright for so long and knowing the benefits of a paceline, I would hate to break up a good one.  I got lots of practice on that during the MS150 this year, ha ha.
2) Don't follow so close that you can't adjust for varying speeds and/or brake without hitting the wheel of the rider in front of you (laterally or in line).  This is especially important for bikes, but can apply to trikes too.  The person whose rear wheel gets hit will probably be fine.  The rider whose front tire gets caught is almost always going down with some road rash.  I've made this mistake exactly once, no more.

Some tips on distance building or strength training would be good, as well as long distance nutrition/hydration. Dan is the master of long distance paired with data (cadence, heart rate, etc).  I am always impressed with his training logs!  Maybe that's just the engineer in me though.  Ha ha.

Great ideas, all.
How about someone looking around to see if wind tunnel studies have been done on bent bikes and trikes to see what the hard data is...opinions be darned.  Even the venerable Velokraft NoCom is beaten in RAAM with legendary pilots.  Is it just because there are more uprights?  Why?  Hard data.
Wow.  I wrote: "Opinions be d-a-m-n-e-d", (without the dashes), and it automatically spit out "darned."  Interesting.

Heard from our friends at the Habitat Suites in Austin yesterday. Once again, The Habitat will be the "HOT Hotel" for the 2014 rally. They are giving us the special rate of $75 a night again this year for either a one bedroom or one bedroom with a sleeper sofa (SAME PRICE for the 1 bedroom or 1 bedroom with sleepeer sofa). I first said 2 bedroom suite, but the Habitat contacted me and said the two bedroom suites are upstairs, and all the HOT suites will be DOWNSTAIRS so we can easily take our bikes and trikes inside. They are currently undergoing upgrades in the suites, and should be all spiffy for us next February.

They are blocking a group of 15 one bedroom and 15 two bedroom suites for the HOT. RESERVE EARLY. You can always cancel, but when they're gone, they're gone. The Habitat is a PERFECT place for our crew -- you can bring your trike or bike in and not have to sleep on it -- PLENTY of space for it. The free breakfast is NOT cold cereal, a banana a hard muffin. It is a REAL breakfast. The free Happy Hour is a much appreciated relaxation. This is a great hotel -- they don't waste things. A "green" hotel that really tries not to waste things. And best of all, they APPRECIATE our staying with them and treat us like GUESTS.

I don't have the code we will need to give them yet. She "thought" it would be "HOT14" but that is not set in stone yet. Reservations MUST BE MADE BY PHONE -- the discount is NOT good for internet booking.

I'll let you know the code ASAP. Just wanted to let y'all know that the HOT Hotel is lined up!

Woohoo!  I'm glad to hear they're making updates: the price is right but their furnishings look/feel like they came straight out of GoodWill.  Not that there's anything wrong with GoodWill, it's just not the first place I'd go for furniture for a hotel.  Wink

It is all set up. The code to give the Habitat for your room is "HOT14." Reservations MUST BE MADE BY PHONE. The discount will not work if booking online.

You can reserve a one bedroom, or a one bedroom with a sleeper sofa for the same price ($75 a night). You can checkout the Habitat to see the place at www/.habitatsuites.com

If you have any questions or have trouble with the reservations, contact me.
