Shifters/derailer
Jul 18th, 2011, 9:29pm

Can you guys chime in on what setup you have as what rear derailer with bar end shifters?? ( 9 or 10 speed)
Like 9 speed bar end shifter  w/high-normal rear derailer.

I am wondering if i need to change it to 9 sp bar end w/ low-normal rear derailer?
 Thanks

You are asking a too general a question.  Ask, can I use a 6 speed shimano bar end shifter with a 10 speed dura-ace derailer? for example.  Or what cassette are you wanting to use.

Like 9 speed bar end shifter  w/high-normal rear derailer.

If your running a Bar End  9 speed rear shifter, are you running a high or low -normal  rear derailer.......

Ok, had a look at my stick bike with bar ends. I would call it a low normal long cage derailuer.

Is your derailer a rapid rise kind?

Ah, I had no idea you were talking about rapid rise. Isn't the Shimano XTR the only rapid rise derailleur around these days? Why would it matter whether a bar end shifter was paired with a rapid rise derailleur or not? It would just shift backwards if it was, wouldn't it?

From what i read, the shifting is still in the same motion for low and high, It just the push and pull is different. I also read that the rapid rise spring pulls the dereailer to the low gears which is the big cog on back, which in return works better with bar end shifters because of the indexes.

The rapid Rise derailer is making a comeback from what i heard.

On my trike when i go from high to lower gears i have to push the shifter back up to the index click that i just pass the keep the chain from clicking like it trying to grab the next gear. But when i go from low to high it there without haveing to move shifter for finer tune of that gear.
It may be that my bar end shifter is worn..

BTW Johnny thanks for the reply...

Went to Easystreet recumbent Sat the 23rd and went ahead and took my catrike . Got there when they open. Got a New Rear Bar End shifter and that was mostly the whole problem with the index shifting. Everything on the driveline is new. My old one Bar End deffently was worn out. While we were there they had sold three trikes. One Ice and two Rovers. We were talking to the man that was buying the Ice and convence him to buy rack, pedals, flag, mirrows.and some little stuff to go along with it ..
Easystreet had a great day yesterday..

The way I've heard, low normal (spring pushes toward larger sprocket) is preferred by moutain bikers because they want a quicker downshift which low normal derailers allow.  Road Racers typically want a quicker upshift and high normal derailers (spring loaded to small sprocket) accommodate this characteristic.

I have bar end shifters with my high normal on a Corsa and it works fine. I had a problem with cable stickiness when I first got the bike (used - 3500 miles) but used a good teflon lube when I changed cables and now do not have any issues - Crisp up and down shifts.

When me and Eddie was doing the bike build last sunday. He got a bike tthat was low-normal derailer and it was shifting backwards. I think us as recumbent rider could use the low-normal because we use  the low gear for hill climbing as  to spin more that the upright bike do. With my trike and new bar end now it works fine. High-normal with bar end.
 Thanks
