It ain't really damage till it eats your hub after slicing every spoke on the drive side.  
 
 
Oh and uhm I'd suggest no one try with any bike to test aikigregs comment that creaking isn't as bad as the Thiesmann leg snap but  Smiley
 
I know it is an extra couple grams but with the roads the way they are would it good to put one of those chain tenders on the inside to keep it from falling off or do they cause more problems then they fix?

Pin stripe tape,  look at your local Pep Boys, they have the largest selection on the shelf.      Clean the area with rubbing alcohol or brake cleaner before you apply the tape.  
 
They also sell a clear body guard tape that's thick.   I used it as a chain protector for the fork on my VK2 and it never wore through.
