Chain/leg conflict
Jul 7th, 2008, 4:29pm

For reasons I won't go into here, I just had the frame replaced on my Stratus XP, with a new 2008 model.  I also took the crankset from Charlie's (now Terrie's) SXP and had it put onto the new frame, since it had ~4,000 miles on it instead of the 14K mine did.   I know they've changed the rear dropout and tubing angles slightly (where the rear wheel hooks in), but beyond that, the frame is the same for all intents and purposes.

When I got the "new" bike back, I immediately noticed that to get the same "feel" of seating/riding position, I have the seatback a full two notches further reclined.  The other thing I noticed was yesterday -- I am getting a LOT of chain grease on the inside of my right calf from the chain hitting me when I'm in the 52T with the higher rear gears, whereas this was a very minor issue in the past with the old frame.  I wiped it off at two different rest stops yesterday, and still had a bunch more on myself at the finish of the ride.  It's like the chain is coming into the chainring slightly higher, and/or slighly further out to the right.

I'm not sure what's so different at the moment about the chainline vs. my seating position, but I'm going to do some careful comparisons to the two frames when I get home tonight.

Those of us too feeble to use the big chainring don't have that problem...

Are the cranks the same length? Also, check the bottom bracket length, and the crank's spacing from your frame.

The crank is a 175, with a 52T -- Charlie didn't sneak a 200/56T in on me...   Wink

All I can figure is that there's a slight difference in the effective vertical distance between the BB and the seat, since I'm reclining my seat to a point where it was distinctively uncomfortable beforehand -- the seatpad hit the backs of my legs too much.  And perhaps the chainring is SLIGHTLY further away from the frame center, as well -- I'll have Tim at PCF look at it.

Whatever it is, there's a VERY definite difference...  to the point it might be considered "unrideable"...   Angry Sad Huh undecided

I have a near permanent mark on my leg in nearly the same spot you show there from my giro's chain. Of course I just ordered some qrings so I should have an ever larger spot on my leg soon.

I'm almost to the point of ordering chain tubes!  Ok actually I'm past that since we need to try a piece on my wifes hurricane to stop an awful racket involving some chain to idler/tube holder interference.

That's very strange. I sure hadn't heard anything about any frame geometry differences between year models.

why unrideable?  I've always just accepted it as the consequence of beeing speedy.

Oh, it's just the concept of human skin vs. steel chain, for hours upon hours... week after week after week...

I took some photos tonight of the two frames, and will try to compare them on transparency film tomorrow...  Kinda doubt I'll see anything, though, because we're not talking about a huge change.

Never been too big a deal, unless I forget to scrun it off in the shower.  Now that time I raced that fujin SL and it was actually SLICING into my leg as I pedalled - that sucked.  I didn't know it until I was done racing - the adrenaline  I suppose - and saw blood dripping onto my socks and didn't know here it was coming from.

Greg - is that the reason you're not a fan of Challenge bikes, specifically the Fujin SL?

Well, I'm not a fan of fujin for a couple ereasons.  One is the chain issue - if you've got something other than skinny legs, you're going to get massive chain rub.  But otherwise they're not very low for low racers and they flex a ton.

They are however a great beginner lowracer or bent - they're very easy to control at slow speed starts.

It's just the fujin I don't care for - afaik the other bikes are fine, though the serian 26 is getting some flak from a few riders.

Well, Randy S. sez that the seatstay point is ~1.6" higher on the new frame style vs. the original one, so having to pin the seat a couple more notches down is expected.  However, the rest of the frame is essentially the same -- so he doesn't know WHAT the difference is...   undecided

To compare Terrie's and my bike frames directly, I"ll have to switch wheels back and forth, to try to get relative height measurements...

You can try mine if you like, but I'm not sure you want to do that.  It'll change the q-factor and hip angle of your ride.

Yah, I know, but I've gotta get my foot a bit further out -- it's worth a try to see if it creates any discomfort.   Wanna mail 'em to me?

PB

The ones I have in some corner of my workshop caused alot of discomfort where the tendons mesh into the foot on the outside. It is worth a shot but if the heal of your foot wants to turn in to compensate for the wider pedal location you'll still get chain rub and some discomfort to go along with it.  Sad

Well, I was able to move my cleats over about 1/8", and it seemed to help SOME at WRL last night... the grease spot wasn't as severe, and I rode without major discomfort, although I might have felt a little of the effect in my left knee after blasting around the lake with Mark.  I'll leave 'em there for a while...
