Dart, anyone?
Jun 11th, 2008, 10:50pm

A Dart is a randonneuring event, like a Fleche, where 3 to 5 bikes make up a team, and teams converge on one finishing point from different directions, except a Dart is 180k, rather than the 360k that a Fleche is. George Evans has proposed an LSR Dart on October 25th. I'm thinking it might be fun to put together an all recumbent Dart team. Anyone interested?

Well given the location and the prep time I have I might be up for it by then.

I'm in...

Nelson and I participated in a true Fleche in '07 (360k).  It's a long story with a bad ending  Grin
The real "Fleche" is ridden on Easter, and other than the distance being 360k, the rules of the Dart are pretty much the same.

The day prior to our Fleche it was a typical warm spring day.  Our Fleche left from San Angelo (west TX) and ended at Joe Pool. Thus, we traveled in a north east direction.  The prevailing winds in TX are 90% of the time out of the southwest, thus the assumption was we would  pretty much have a tail wind. WRONG

As soon as we departed (at noon) a storm kicked up.  The winds came out of the northeast, thus in our faces.  We could only ride about 10mph, and even on downhills we'd slow down and had to pedal.  At around the 80-90 mile mark it was getting dark.  About that time the winds got even stronger and it began snowing.  To make a long story somewhat shorter, we rode until approx 1am.  We were roughly half way, and it appeared we would run out of time because we couldn't average more than about 9mph. We rode directly into a strong headwind and freezing snow for about 125 miles.  We all agreed that we would not make the cut off time, so as to not risk safety riding at night in those almost blizzard conditions, we DNF.

So while I have experience in this type of team event, I also have revenge on my mind.

The finish location is going to be the Lantana Lodge, just west of Pilot Point. I told George I was planning on entering a team of recumbents. Now, we need to work out a route. It needs to be at least 180k. George said it would be nice if everyone finished at nearly the same time, and could all have dinner together at sunset at the Lantana Lodge restaurant. Sounds like a plan to me...

Bud (et all) - I've pasted the link to the RUSA web's DART rules (http://www.rusa.org/dartrules.html).  Note that a team consists between 3-5 members.  So far there are four people; you, Greg, Mark and I.

Since you started the thread for a bent team, I assume you'll be captain (a great title for you)!  I wonder if Nelson or Steve can either join the team, or help design a route.  They both ride in the area and know the roads.  George Evans has a 200k that leaves for the lodge, we could possibly modify that route.  Here is the cue sheet:

Bud - are you going to e-mail Geo and Dan to let them know we have a team.  Looks like we have the following potential team ridrers:

Bud
Greg
Mark
Nelson
Ray

What do you all think about the route I posted, or one of you more knowledable of the area can modify the route.

Wow, it didn't take long to get up a team. Maybe we should go for two recumbent teams.

I had already gotten out my RUSA handbook and read up on Darts. I notice it's supposed to be a 12 hour ride, and they encourage you not to get finished early, so it sounds like the last half will probably be lots of talking and easy riding. I think I can handle that...

12 hours would make for a pretty slow 180k!

And we should get two teams - that would *rock*.  With the Pettys, and if Steve Barlow has his bike by then, we could do it for sure.

I'm bumping this thread up since we're within two months of the Dart date, October 25th. Are the five of us still a team? Does anyone have an idea for the route? We need to create it before too long.

So what would we change? Maybe use a different north/south route on the east end rather than SH289? Does anyone know those area roads?

Yeah Paul can take my spot  Smiley

Was doing a little google maps research and unless you went down 377 all the way them looped east around 455/428 and then back up 377 there doesnt' seem to be that much out there. At least from the aerial view it looks like alot of dirt roads through those farms, or those horrible crushed tan stone stuff.

Oh There are a lot of fun roads, but be forewarned its VERY hard to avoid Chip Seal throughout the North Texas Area, bring your cushy tires.

I'll make a route proposal in a few days, but in general I'm looking at

Pilot Point
Tioga
Gunter
Howe
Tom Bean
Blue Ridge
Melissa
Weston
Celina
Aubrey
Pilot Point

I suggest some other people draw up routes as well,  We can vote.
I intend to mix in a lot of small roads I know.

Take Care,
Nelson.

Just to make sure I assume people want a loop, which is legal, although not the best type of route for a Dart, the other option that we could consider is a straight in route.  This is either logistically challenging, or adds considerable extra riding.  I toyed with the idea of parking at Pilot Point and riding out somewhere, camping, sleeping, hoteling etc and then riding back at the start time, more Dartish.

One of my ideas for that was say from the Mineral Wells motel, or a nice State Park (lots of options)

Nelson.

Hi Nelson - after our 2XDart, aka Fleche in 2007, I think we learned how hard it is logistically for a point-to-point route.  As long as a loop is permitted for a Dart, I would recommend it.

A loop also gives you the ability to ride in both a head and tail wind.  If you remember our Fleche, point-to-point we battled a a fierce head wind to 100 plus miles.

I'm looking foward to the Dart.  Even though our Fleche was extremely difficult, it's a great team event, primarily because you have to stay together, and finish together, AS A TEAM....

Hmmmmm, I hadn't even thought of a point to point ride. With it being October, odds are we'll have better weather than y'all did on that Fleche, but I guess we could still end up with a headwind the whole ride. A point to point route does sound like a grand adventure, though.

Bud - for unknown reasons, Nelson and I are surrounded by some type of vortex that always results in grand adventures.

Have you (Bud) sent anything to Dan D., or whoever the Dart contact is letting them know we plan on having a team?  I've not kept up with the correspondence, thus don't know the due dates for route submission, etc...

Also, how many rbent riders want to ride a Dart? Is there enough interest for more than one team?

Maybe we could ride one of those casino buses up to Oklahoma, then ride bikes back south from there...   Wink  Taking advantage of the probable north wind tailwind...

I replied to George Evans by email right after we got a team together, and told him we had a team. I think the next thing we need to do is submit a route. I'll check and see when the deadline is.

So, to verify, our team is:

Me
Greg
Nelson
Ray
Paul

Greg, are you still in?

Paul, it's just as well that you won't be on the X-Stream. By RUSA Dart rules, "At least 25 km must have been ridden between the end of the 10th hour and the 12th hour of the ride." That means we have to use most of the 12 hours to complete our 180k, so you aren't going to be Speedy Gonzales on that ride anyway.

I guess I got George cranked up on the Dart. He posted this message in the LSR google group. Here's his schedule for the Dart teams:

1. Identify captains and team members - Friday, 12 Sept
2. Sign and send waivers - Saturday, 20 Sept
3. Send routes and schedules - Thursday 25 Sept

I'll go ahead and send him the info on the team. Will everyone on the team download, print out, and sign the waiver? You can download it here. George says after signing it, you can scan it and email it to him, hand it to him at the September 20th brevets, or snail mail it to him. Email him here.

Still working on our route, Nelson?

Yes I'll post it via Bikely on Sunday I hope.  If a loop is OK?  A little hectic here until then (I just got home from Sarah's HS football game and band performance here at 12:30 so not going to work on it this evening!)

That looks excellent. It even has a Tom Bean visit. Would our last control be in Celina? That's about the right distance for the 10 hour rule, isn't it?

No one has a catchy name for the team? How about "Dart Vader"?

Yeah the last control is the requisite distance from the end and they have some seating and eats for an extended stay if we manage to get there too early.  Certainly we won't be in any hurry with 12hrs to kill. Socializing will be a high priority I imagine.

Take Care,
Nelson.

Nelson - Thanks for designing the route.  I'll look at it when I get home.  Our firewall won't let me ping it from work.  Without seeing it, I'm guessing that you could turn it into a 200k Perm!

Bud - are you going to submit the route to George?

I also like the team name Bud!

Hopefully the 180k Dart will be significantly different than the 360k Fleche attempt Nelson and I did last year.  We thought 24 hours would allow plenty of socialization.  So 12 hours for 180k seems relatively easy, since we do 200k plus in less time than that. Speaking from years of Rando experience, we're better off to get to the last control with time to burn, and not waste time early on in the ride.  We could have a mechanical or weather delay, road/construction, or a host of other issues.

Sorry to sound so uncharastically glommy.  I'm excited to do this event, and hopefully it will be a fun, enjoyable event.

I'll obtain the control contact information when I get some spare time, I have most of them already in various files.

Bud,

my files contain the following, but I couldn't find any info on the Shell station there in Celina, although I know it is the next to last  control on George's El Caballo de Simon route, which I thought I had a copy off.  So we may not be alone there while we hang out.

Quick Check
411 W Haning St
Howe, TX
(903) 532-5265

Branscome Grocery
407 W FM 545
Blue Ridge, TX 75424
(972) 752-9833
Every Day 07:00-20:00

Mobile Kwik Chek
118 Britton St.
Tom Bean, TX 75489
(903) 546-6343
6am-10pm

I'm sure it'd be a good idea to verify these numbers, times.

Take Care,
Nelson.

Thanks, Nelson. I'm thinking that's the Shell Expressmart at 1513 Preston Road South, Celina, 75009. I'll verify everything and get started on the control cards.

George Evans has made reservations for the Lantana Lodge restaurant for 7:30 pm for dinner after the ride. I think I'll pack a change of clothes for that.

Nelson,

We have 12 hours to finish, and it sounds like some of us are riding the 165k permanent on Sunday, so I don't think we'll want to hammer anyway.

Why will you be upright?

I just got an e-mail from Charlie Jenkins saying that JS isn't a current RUSA member.  I checked RUSA, and he does not show to be a 2008 member.  Strange though, as it has his Last Chance 1200k results as "pending".

I'll contact John to ensure he's a RUSA member.

I'm hopefully going to do the next cut tonight on "The Precious" as my wife has dubbed the carbent.  I have my tools laid out and the food poisoning seems to be mostly gone - I dropped 10 pounds in two days, but I don't recommend it as a diet as I'm pretty weak right now.

Once I get the boom mostly right, I'll still need your help Bud to dremel out the channel for the boom....

Worse case scenario I'm V-rexed again.

the little cut down the center.  I don't have a dremel to do it right.  Might just pick up a cheap one anyway though.

Are you talking about the split on the end of the boom? What would be wrong with using a hacksaw?

I think I'm ok.   I think it's sized right now, but I need to saw the split tonight, size the chain, and raise the bars a bit.  I spent most of my daylight time yesterday trying to find where the movers had put my bike toolbox  Grin

The only thing I might need is to borrow your twofish lockblock again.  I have my lights but the blocks were on backorder.

Well I dusted off the Corsa for the commute today, looks I will be coming bent (more than usual?).  So Greg are you really going to make your inaurgural carbent foray on the Dart?  I look forward to seeing it!

Hey Steve what time are you expecting to leave the house Saturday morning, I'll do the Ray lunch/ride trade with you.

I started rereading this thread and noticed a couple things.

I never signed the waiver.  Can someone download the PDF and attach it to an email and send it to ggross@godleyisd.net?  I can't access much of anything from work - I dunno how this forum isn't blocked.  I'll scan it and email it to George now if someone can get me his email address.

What time are we starting from the lodge exactly?

Finally, after getting the carbent more adjusted last night I realized that Dana sent me the wrong bars and riser, so it's v-rexing again till next week, looks like.

Crap ,I had plans of commandeering the carbent during the dart! Seriously ,that sucks. I was looking forward to seeing you on the new toy.  Sorry to hear  the disappointing news.

I've made up control cards and am printing out some copies of the cue sheet. Anything else we need?

Steve,

What time are you departing from your house in the morning (5:30)?  I'm kinda sorta thinking of heading to your house to meet y'all, then follow you up to Pilot Point.  I was gonna leave my house at 5am, and since it takes me about 30 minutes to get to your house, I wouldn't have to leave any earlier to head your way.
