LSR Brevet Oct 11 -- 200/300/400/600K
Sep 29th, 2008, 7:26pm

Once again, the LSR gang is doing their regularly-scheduled multi-distance option brevet ride, this time from the Italy start location.  Start time 7AM.  I'm in for the 300K, on the XS, as are Bud, Steve, and Peggy.

The weather's looking a little iffy for this Saturday, but it could still be a nice day for this...   Richard, ya wanna try your first 200K?   Wink   Any other takers?  I'm still planning for the 300K...

Mark ,those corn fields that you so fondly saw(and remember in August & 109 degrees)are calling. It's can't be any warmer than you rode the brevet then.

Heck, we're in the easiest stretch of the year, now!

I will be there for at least the 200.  I could be convinced into doing the 300 if y'all don't try and kill me.

Greg, I can only speak for Peggy & I...we are there to have FUN & SURVIVE our first 300K. I'm using the Ray Torrey 5 hour-for every 100k ridden theory . Although we may have to cut time at controls a little short(remember Dixie's closes early) ,so we'll have to hustle a little to get there(and then cruise from there)throughout the day ,without hammering too much.

This uncharted territory for a lot of us. I think If we all look after one another ,we should be fine.

Right now the forecast is just calling for scattered thunderstorms, so let's hope they're scattered somewhere other than where we're riding.

As I recall, Dixie's closes at 7:00 pm and we're starting at 7:00 am, so we'll want to keep a good enough pace to make Dixie's (somewhere around 150 miles) in 12 hours. Otherwise, we'll have to send a post card from the Mount Calm post office, and there really isn't a good store anywhere else around there (that I know of).

We shouldn't have a serious heat problem, so if we keep our earlier control stops brief, we can enjoy some food and a long break at Dixie's, and plan on doing the last 38 miles in the dark. Sound like a plan?

You've talked me into it.  They're open till 8, but will often stay open just a bit later for us randonneurs if we need to and call them.  On my 300k last time, we didn't get there till 8:30 and they still fixed us up.  After that though there's N-O-T-H-I-N-G but soda pop machines, so bring some change.

And yeah, we should have no problems getting there even with a moderate pace, since we won't need the hours of breaks like I needed on the last 300k.

Yes, that's a plan(as far as I'm concerned). So Greg ,are you joining the 300K group? We did 127 miles in 10 hours Saturday at a very leisurely pace(and long control stops).

We may have some "bonus miles" this Saturday -- just saw this on the LSR forum:

<<According to TXDOT this morning, we'll have some bonus miles this
weekend between the Dawson and Mexia controls.  There are two bridges
under construction north of 27, and one of them is impassable even on
foot.  As George mentioned a while back, the shortest paved route is
31/171 via Hubbard, which adds about 4 miles each way. >>>

Yes, if we keep the pace moderate.  On the v-rex, I can't roll out at 25mph to the first control  like those clowns did last time.  The bike is too heavy and isn't aerodynamic enough for me to do that and make it the whole way.  I should be able to maintain a 16 average assuming we don't have ridiculous wind, but I don't plan on being the first up any hills.

The forecast now isn't calling for rain until next Monday or Tuesday, so I guess the rain has been replaced with bonus miles...
