Sheldon Brown Memorial ride 04/01 White Rock Lake
Feb 6th, 2008, 11:28pm

OK since I am the guy with the most daytime time on his hands I'm taking the initiative to have a ride around White Rock Lake. Initially I'm going to suggest a start time of 1800 (6PM) at the same rally point as the Ride of Silence on the west side of the lake off Lawther Dr.using the bike bridges on both ends of the lake.

Bike Portland's ride will have a SB look-alike contest and beard contest, but I don't think I can get that part organized, I'm going to have enough problem with just getting the ride organized. If someone else would like to hold a contest or contests, feel free.

Since this is going to be on April Fool's day wearing of goofy costumes will be encouraged, my wife says my normal bike cliothing looks like an April Fool's joke anyway Cheesy

Anybody have the e-mail addy for the guy that's doing the Ride of Silence now? I need to pick his brain some.

Excellent choice of day, Opus...  Perhaps we can find somewhere to get a bunch of those "flagpole eagles"...

Great idea.  In addition to memorializing Sheldon Brown, my wife and I are looking forward to riding our new Greenspeed Anuras with some other recumbents.  This should be a nice stately paced ride.  I like the idea of all riders wearing flagpole eagles on their helmets!

With the ride starting at 6, I expect it will be dark by the time we finish.  We don't have lights.  Is there enough lighting where bike lights are not needed?

Richard, by April 1 it'll be reasonably decent evening light.  No worries...

Opus, you might contact Gail Spann, at bikingail@aol.com -- she used to captain the Dallas ROS activities.

I checked the time for sunset on 04/01 and if we leave promptly at 1800 we will arrive back at the parking lot a few minutes before sunset, thanks to Daylight Savings Time. So no lights will be neccesary unless you ride to the ride, in which case you probably already have good lights Grin

Thanks for the wake-up.  I was reading April, but thinking March.

If I can get my transportation situation taken care of, I would enjoy the ride. The next Sat, April 05 is the Tour Dallas which I will be riding over there so a little warm up ride at the lake would be nice. I'll see if I can locate some light weight eagles in the meantime.

I'm having a problem getting the frame repaired on my bike (not enough money, and a bad reaction to one of my meds made actually holding on to tools not work for more than a few minutes at a time, 2 or 3 times a day).

So, I might need to borrow a bike to have something to ride for the Sheldon Brown Memorial ride.. Anybody have a spare bike or a stoker seat on a tandem?

OK it's no longer an estimate I will not have a bike by 04/01. I won't have the frame finished nor all the bits and pieces required to connect the cranks to the rear wheel. Unless I get a really good paying gig (and all the gigs I have in the works are dependant on having a working bike) I won't get those parts any time soon. I will either need to borrow a bike or ride stoker on a tandem. Please PM me if you have a spare bike, or know someone I should ask about borrowing their bike.

Thanks Paul. I had a short ride on an EZ-1 a few years ago and except for the seriously short gearing (which wll not be a factor given my pitiful state of fitness)  I found it a nice ride, much better seat than the 1983 Stratus  Grin I would hope so after 20+ years of learning about seats for 'bents.

Bump, I need to keep this ride in your conciousness. I think the rally point for this ride is the boathouse (?) on the west side of the lake, where the Ride of Silence rallies. consider this a warm-up for the RoS!

That's the best location, although that's not where the ROS starts.  But the ROS parking lot is totally torn up with construction at the moment, so the boathouse and Tee Pee Hill parking lots are the best location.
