Sandals - Winter Riding
Dec 11th, 2007, 3:03pm

Bud, what type of sandles do you wear when riding your bent?  I want to order a pair, and haven't had much luck trying to find them on line.

What do you do to cover your feet when the weather gets cold?

First of all, it would be nice if I had greater than a 5th grade edukation and kood speel.

I found two sandals, one Shimano, the other Keen.  I've never heard of Keen, but they look pretty cool.  Anyone else have an opinion?

Keen - via REI (more expensive than the Shimano)

Mine are Shimano sandals. They've changed since I bought mine. Mine have two straps; the new ones have three, so I can't testify how the new ones are, but I really like mine.

The soles are as stiffer than many mtb shoes, but not as stiff as good road shoes. I had trouble with hot spots on my feet back when I used spd pedals. After I changed to Bebop pedals, that wasn't a problem.

For socks, I wear Pearl Izumi Attack socks. When it's cold, I add wool socks on top of those, and Rocky Gore-tex socks (it looks like they've changed some, too) over the other socks. I tried neoprene booties over the sandals, but didn't like them. I've found that if it's really cold, I can add those small chemical handwarmer packs on the top of my toes, and my feet will stay toasty.

Bud - thanks for the quick reply.
  • Do you know any local shops that sell them?  I made the mistake once of ordering shoes over the internet, and they didn't fit well.
Do you have any other recommendations, or would you buy them again if you were so inclined?
Do you recommend them for Brevets v.s. traditional shoes?

lesson #1 - Shoes must be worn prior to purchase...

Also do you (or anyone) know anything about the Keen sandal that REI sells?

Ray,

I don't know who has them around here, and I can't even say for sure that the new style feels just like mine. Shimano does seem to size their shoes correctly, and with sandals, width isn't a big deal. Call the cycle shops; I bet you can find some locally to try on.

I say they're good for brevets, but then I've never done a brevet wearing anything else on my feet, so I have nothing for comparing to.

I'm not familiar with Keen sandals.

I haven't checked their latest catalog, but Lake used to make bike sandals...

I've got a pair of Lakes, 45/46 size, that I'd be willing to part with for a nominal fee...  They're just a LITTLE bit too narrow for me where the strap re-enters the base.   I can bring 'em to the dinner if you're attending....

Paul, I wear a 43/44, but thanks for the offer. Angie and I wish we could attend the dinner this Sunday; heck it's less than 10 minutes from our house.  We have back to back parties starting tomorrow all the way through the weekend.

I hope everyone has a great time.

I have the old style Shimano sandals and they work fine in the winter with double socks and toe covers when it gets real cold. I've seen them at RBM but i'm not sure they would have them this time of year. I haven't seen Keen bike sandals but their other shoes are good quality.
