How not to bend a fork
Sep 18th, 2007, 7:33pm

Well the ice trick worked, but I managed to destroy the fork in the process of learning how to do it. First of all you have to make sure the ice goes the entire length of the tube, or you get a wrinkle in the tube where the ice ends Sad Second, mark the location of the bend so that both tubes end up with the dropouts in the same location, which didn't happen this time  Angry Sad Third, have some way of measuring the amount of bend, so that the tubes match when looking from the side.

New fork due in this Thursday.

Oops. I had all kinds of troubles bending forks, until I bought a $1 ebay fork. It bent perfectly.

Maybe you could adapt this technique to your needs?

Well, of course it's for spoons.  That's why I suggested the technique might be adapted for bending forks.

New fork is almost done, just a little tweaking to get as much rake in as possible. Only one tiny problem, the roller closest to the steer tube melted the ice inside the fork leg a small amount and dented the tube of the leg under the cantilever bosses. Then I have to drill a hole to mount the sidepull caliper.

Foo,

Would a nap qualify as a "peak emotional experience" for spoon/fork bending?

It's hard to do a perfect job with that style of bender. As long as a dent isn't deep enough to structurally weaken the fork, you should be good to go.

Yeah, well I think it would work better if it wasn't near or over 100F in my garage when I'm trying to use the bender. This is a technique that would work better in Switzerland where it was invented. Then the only thing melting the ice would be the heat from bending the tube.

I took my first ride with the new fork today. No idea how far or fast, the computer still isn't operational yet. One screwup I made was to cut the steer tube to the same length as the old fork. The new headset has 10mm more stack height than the one on the bike now undecided
