Not unlike when you're walking down the sidewalk, and you come to an intersection and look up to your left to your (nonexistent) helmet mirror to see if any cars are coming...

Can't tell you the number of times that has happened. Or how about you're walking and hear a noise behind you, and you look where your mirror would be if you were riding before you turn to see what's actually behind you.

I ride my bike to ride my bike, and sometimes it takes me where I need to go.

Rose and I haven't ridden the tandem much this year. But, in the course of two years before that, it ended up with over 4000 miles on it. I got so used to calling out, "Coast" when I was stopping my pedaling, that I would forget and say it when I was riding my own bike. That will bring a strange look from the rider beside you.

I ride a golf cart between buildings all the time at work, and catch myself trying to look in my eyeglass mirror (which is, of course, at home on my cycling sunglasses) often.

Ken,

That is a good mindset to be in. I am much more in tune with whats going on around me when I'm on the bike.
