Celina ride 7/7/07
Jun 12th, 2007, 7:09pm

After talking with Paul,I understand there's some interest in a 50+ mile Celina ride(located in northern collin county). We can meet  on the town square(downtown Celina-free parking) and head out. 8:00 am is the start time. I have route map, elevation chart,& directions to Celina.

There's a very nice Cafe(clean/good food) on the square for grub after the ride(very rider friendly. Wide variety of food. Food cost from $6-$10.Debit/creidt cards/cash accepted).

I can provide specific route maps directions later(most of us are coming from the south of Celina). Take Preston road(289) north to the stop light in Celina(Preston rd/FM455). Turn left at the light(go past the high school/football stadium). F455 turns into Pecan street. Take Pecan(west approx. 1 mile to the town square)to Ohio Street. There's free parking on either side of the square.

It's a free ride in beautiful horse country. A few hills, but pretty easy course really. There are several areas we can stop(convenience stores, parks). We'll ride through Tioga,Tx(birthplace of Gene Autry-the singin' cowboy),across Lake Ray Roberts,etc...

We will be riding on Preston road(north for 9-10 miles) & Hwy 377 south(for 15 miles). Both roads have very wide shoulders to ride on. Preston is not busy north of Prosper. 377 can be a little busy. The rest of the roads are county roads. Very quiet, little traffic.

I'll plan on coming.  Have good maps because I suspect most of you are faster than I so I'll need to know where I'm going if I lose sight of everyone!  I've got room for another bike in my pickup if anyone needs a ride from Fort Worth area.  I live on the north side in Keller.  Charlie is out of town  till mid-July.
Is the route flatter than the Collins Classic?

Yes,it's flatter than the Collin Classic. There are 3 rollers just north of Celina on Preston & a few rollers on 377 south of Tioga. Other than that, just a few stray climbs. Glad to hear you'll be joining us. I will provide route maps.

We're also investigating a "casual" 30 mile route, that goes from Celina west to Aubrey and back.

According to Steve, it's no shoulder, but apparently very lightly travelled.

Just a note, the casual 30 mile route is primarily on county roads(FM455/FM428). These are 2 lane(nicely paved)roads,BUT there are no or little shoulders. However, there is very little vehicle traffic on these roads. I didn't want anyone to be surprised by the lack of shoulders to ride on.

Terrie and I are tentatively planning to do the 30-mile route on July 4th, along with her 16-yr-old.  No time set yet, but it'll be sometime in the morning.  So if anyone would like to join us for a casual exploratory ride, let me know, and I'll keep you posted...

[Never mind, we're planning to do the White Rock ride/brunch on the 4th instead]

I need directions for coming from Plano on TX 5, or for coming from the Parker Rd DART station. I'll be a little tired since I'll be riding 130 miles the day before. I'm working up to the RRR in August. First step is to make one ride in the range of the ride to WF (done), next step is to make a ride like the trip to WF and ride the next day, like say visiting my friend that is now in Dennison and riding the Celina ride the next day.

Change in plans for me. I have church stuff to do on the 7th, one of the pitfalls of being clergy. We are having evening services once a month and I'm expected to help plan them even though I'm going to be out of town for the service.

OK, the forecast as of Thursday morning is for heavy rain Friday night, but only a 30% chance on Saturday -- so, if the weather radar makes it look like a clear morning, I'm planning to still do this ride Saturday, fenders installed, if the Stradas are still leading...   Terrie can't make it, due to company visiting through the weekend, so she won't be in the 30-mile group if such a thing still forms.

I'd like to propose making the 50+ miles into a metric (62.5) if possible...

What say ye, Steve and Peggy?  Ken, joining us?

50+ miles it will be. I asked Corsa Ken a few weeks ago & he will be joining us. Let's meet at 8:00am this Saturday on the square in Celina(weather permitting).  I'm going to drive the area tomorrow to make sure there are no erosion issues with the roads.

If anyone need directions to Celina,e-mail me @nfwgonzo.com or see my earlier post with directions. Lucy's is a nice cafe is eat after the ride.

Excellent point. As I've said many times,no one is "penning" a check for me to ride anywhere. I DON'T have to ride in the rain.

RATZENFRATZENSCRABBYDAGNABBY!!!!!!!  The work Gods have decreed that I have to go to Austin tomorrow to deliver some equipment and check it out, so odds are good that I WON'T be able to join you in Celina Saturday morning...   I'll do what I can to get back with enough sleep to make it...  but if not, enjoy....

Anyone know if the 30 miler is on?  Not sure I'm up for a 62 miler with all the cramping problems I've had the last few weeks.

I still haven't managed to get a doctor's appointment, but I'm feeling better and thinking I'll ride. Is there a wheezing geezer group?

C'mon bud, your "wheezing group" is a 19.5 mph avg.  I just drove the route. All roads are open(from the flodding) and in good shape.  8:00am ride time from the square in Celina. Great scenery. A lot of horse farms in/around Pilot Point & Aubrey area. Some of this route was also in the Denton Power Rally ride held in October.

Lucy's(cafe-on the square)afterwards. Now, if the weather will cooperate, will be good to go.

-Steve

P.S.
Paul, glad to hear you'll be joining us. In your honor,I've added a 14 mile out/back from Pilot Point to the Marina on Lake Ray Roberts. Total ride distance-63 miles.

AND...as it is as a rural route, there are occasional loose dogs(a little extra motication for more speed). What kind of head count are we expecting for tomorrow's ride? How many route maps should I print??

Thanks for the route extension, Steve!

Sorry guys, but I'm gonna wimp out on the Celina ride.  Haven't done a ride this year over 38 miles that I didn't start getting big-time cramps.  Hoped I'd be up to speed by the time this rolled around but just haven't been able to get it together with all the rain.
I'll be at the Peach Pedal next weekend.  Hope I'll meet some of you there.
Enjoy the ride tomorrow.  I hear it's a great route.

Yep,& I think Celina MAY even have running water. You'll be able to see tomorrow. Now Tioga, that's a town with a different story.

Wow, looking at google maps, there's just no way to get from here to there. Where does 121 turn into toll road?

121 does NOT turn into the tollway. 121 does intersect the tollway. I would recommend you just take Preston rd(from 121). Turn left(North) on Preston road for 12-15 miles until you come to Celina. Turn left on FM-455 to the town square.

You're telling me these past three years of radio news stories about some new part of 121 becoming a toll road were false?

Some parts of 121 are toll but they can be avoided if you wish by using business 121 or the access roads. When Steve says tollway he means the Dallas North Tollway. Give it a few years and all of the expressways will be tollways!
