Texas Time Trials
May 9th, 2007, 4:54pm

With Greg talking up the Texas Time Trials I’m thinking about participating in it for the experience.   I looking at the 6 hour TT by myself of maybe teaming up with someone like TJ and splitting the 12 hour TT.  If anyone is interested, sometime in June I would like to car-pool over the TTT course and do a few 20 mile laps to check it out.  If I like the course I will certainly participate this fall!  Otherwise I will hang out and crew for riders.

I had been thinking of trying this, especially after picking up the Corsa.  I need to head on down there and ride since the course is only about 12/15 miles from the house.  Like you Terry, if I don't ride the 6 hour challenge I was gonna volunteer to help in anyway possible.  Greg, thanks for posting the link to the photos.

I was debating where to ride the day before the picnic. That might be a good day for a fast loop or three around this course. Then, slower recovery miles with Rose on Sunday would be in order.

Terry , Bud and whoever else, I live 3 miles south of the Burleson WalMart just off HWY 174.  Phone 817-235-8542.  I got the Corsa (2006 demo) from Kelvin @ Angletech.  I purchased my Rocket GL63 from him 9 years ago and have been real happy with it, so I guess I'm a loyal customer.  Including the shipping and various accouterments, I still paid less than what I could have walked out the door at Plano for just a stock model.  Not to dis Plano, but I like dealing with Kelvin.

One other thing, I talked to a guy a little bit ago here at work who lives very close the TTT route.  He said from all the oil field traffic going on out there in the county, the roads are starting to get pretty tore up.  It's probably a good idea to get some scouting rides along the route.

I drove the course a couple of months ago, and was alarmed not only with the roughness of the roads, but with the volume and speed of the truck traffic, too. Mark Metcalfe said it wasn't that bad last year, and that maybe I just caught it on a bad day, but I wanted to see it again before committing to riding anything there.

Yup.  I bought my wife's V-rex from him last year on consignment, with the same result.  When we had a couple problems with it he didn't blink an eye in replacing the components sight unseen.

All youse guys with da Corsas...
Perhaps you should call the team the "Corsa-irs".... Wink

Of course, it's not TOTALLY out of the question that I might be up for participating...  it just sounds like a brutal day on the bike, from what I've heard/read from my GDB pals.  On the other hand, one of my references is Brenda Barnell doing 500 miles in 44 hours...

I was talking to Ray Torrey Today, we're planning on participating on a 4 man 500 mile team at the moment, but he mentioned how cool it would be to have a 4 man Recumbent 500 mile team.  Last year Ray and I rode the 12Hour as a 2 man team.  Truck traffic wasn't that bad, and the road is the same for everybody.  The course is tough for recumbents as it is definitely not flat.  That said the recumbents did well last year setting several new records.  The conditions can be quite brutal, we had very high winds last year that made the going tough, and reversed direction midway.  Its a great experience, and a great bunch of people.  One thing I recommend from our experience is to definitely do only one lap between relays.  Ray and I pulled a couple of 2 lappers, and our 2nd lap times we're pretty slow.  I've ridden this course just last month as part of the LSR 300K Brevet and it seemed about the same as I remember, and the night time traffic was non-existent.

Take Care,
Nelson.

Hello everyone.  My name is Ray Torrey.  I joined rbent today.  I ride a Bacchetta (Ti) Aero.  I'm currently recoving from reconstructive knee surgery, though I've had a successful racing career, mostly on DF bikes.  Last year, Nelson Ralls and I rode the 2-man 12 hour TTTT and covered 200 miles in a little less than 12 hours.  I will be back to 100% strength by July.

This year we would like to assemble a 4 man, 500 mile team.  If the team members ride equal distance, that would be 125 miles per rider, as the course is 20 miles in length, with an altitude gain of approximately 1000 feet.  If the team rode one lap each, then each team member would have at least a 3 hour rest between pulls.

The chip seal surface is no worse than any other.  As a matter of fact, about half the course is fairly smooth chip seal. There is a short stretch of the course where last year there was some construction vehicles, but as far as I know, none of the racers had any traffic issues.

The good news is that every rider who rides the 500 mile course receives a very nice trophy, regarless of the place they come in.

After this months 600k Brevet, Nelson and I will begin speed work, which will include training on the course.  Please let us know if you are interested in joining us for this extremely enjoyable and fulfilling event.

You can call me at 817-975-8638, or e-mail at ray.torrey@verizon.com.

Regards

Ray Torrey

Glad you're here, Ray.  I rode with you a few weeks ago on my red P-38 at an LSR 128k populaire.

What's the possibility of getting a crew together to ride the course for at least three laps on a day over Memorial Day weekend?  I can't do Sunday, but should be able to Saturday or Monday...  early morning start, to get 'er done?

When's that next "populaire" you mentioned?  OH, I see it's Saturday the 26th...   Would it be worth attempting to get together on Monday?
