2018 HHH ride reports
Aug 26th, 2018, 3:40pm

Well, there is no emoticon that shows a little smiley face in front of a flame thrower, so I'll just have to say it was hot and windy for this year's HHH. I think they held us a little longer this year than last year--starting us at exactly 7. Lots of tandems to cruise behind early. I think this year my bike was faster due to a change of tires. The gator skins didn't seem as mushy and allowed for quicker accelerations than I have had in the past. I was going to try to do a Bud Special again this year--do the whole race without stopping. That sounds like I've actually done a Bud Special--I've only TRIED a Bud Special before. My bowels had a different idea at 40 miles. Yes, I made it to a rest stop! Stopped twice more due to the heat and wind. At mile 87 or so when we turned into that wind my heart dropped into my stomach. It was very, very tough to see my average speed drop mile by mile from my top average speed of 21.3 down, down, down past that magic 20mph and then on down to 18.8. That was just my moving speed. I finished with my Garmin reading 5:20. Strava says 5:21. We'll see what the actual time is after my three stops are figured in. If there is any encouraging news for me after this one, it's that I wasn't as much of a character out of some zombie apocalypse movie this year after the race as I was last year.
My wife stretched herself and rode the 50 miler. I'm really proud of her!!! And my daughter, for the second year in a row, was introduced to my wife's Musashi the night before the race and then did the 100K!!! She's an animal!
I really enjoyed the dinner that the Bradfords threw for us the night before the race. Don't know what we'll do for carbs next year!!!!!

Good to see you there Jim. Pretty cool having your family there and riding. Hopefully I can make it back next year and be in better health.

If you rode the HHH the results can be seen on mychiptime.com. Again this year what they report is off just a little bit (in our favor) but nobody but us recumbents and tandems needs to know that. My Garmin read 5:20 of moving time. My official chip time was 5:10 today. The times may be updated and revised later, but that's the way they stand today. Also, there were a bunch of folks who supposedly did the race in something like one hour. When they get that all straightened out your overall place and place in your age group may change.

By the way, my daughter, who rode her mother's Musashi for the first time in the parking lot of the church we stayed at the night before (and wrecked on that ride), GOT SECOND PLACE IN HER AGE GROUP ON THE 100K!!!!!!

I was really looking forward to reading everyone's experiences on this year's ride, but I don't guess anybody is going to chime in this year. I kind of thought this year of all years there would be stories of suffering and overcoming the elements.

I learned several things from this ride.
#1)- Go up the day before and drive the route, don't try driving up at 2-2:30 am the day of.
#2)- Don't try to go to the bath room 10 minutes before start time because they will start the ride early and you will have to run back to your ride as everyone is starting and they will not see you! Sorry to the people I almost knocked down running to my corovelo.
#3)- Don't try to read the route map while pedaling, you will lose the map as it blows away!
#4)- Don't let anyone tell you you have to go straight or direct you away from the finish street turn. A person with a yellow vest and official looking ID badge told me I could not turn right onto Scott St to go to the finish line. He told me to keep riding to the barricaded street. Wrong!
#5)- Don't ask directions from someone doing another distance!
#6)- Check your camera before the ride. I could not get the GoPro to come on. I guess on the ride up to Wichita Falls, I had dropped something on the start button. The SD card was full and I couldn't tell without my reading glasses on!
#7)- I could not believe all the cheaters out there. Two guys started about 7 miles from the end of the 25 mile route. Geez, I guess it made them feel good.
#8)- Don't go so hard at the beginning!

I'll be back next year and will be better prepared now that I have gotten my feet wet. Maybe I'll go up two days early next year.

Well I'll go back over my experience at HHH. I was able to get a spot in the YMCA again this year. I like this place overall cause I can park there and walk a couple of blocks to the trade show. They're charging 40 now but they provide a morning breakfast and you can fill your bottle with ice and water, plus the shower after the ride. Anyway rode to the cage where they keep us and found it to be filling fast. I had decided to keep it simple (easy) this year and partake of the goodies the rest stops have to offer (there's some good BBQ out there). They drop the flag and off we go around 7 and it was a clean run all the way to the 1st rest stop. I didn't see the usual 4 across the road or wreakcreational riders where we would  have to pass. I stopped at the 1st stop and filled up and in a few minutes the 1st wave of roadies hit. I mixed back in dreading the ride to the 2nd stop going through the rolling hills. Mile 15 is well known for stadium size crashes due to passing and crossing wheels. I happily it to the 2nd with incident. From there it's mild rollers and fairly high speed. Getting passed by large groups hopping one doesn't clip you front wheel while passing. I get across the tracks and saw the train was sitting to the west. I found I had lucked out as later riders got trapped by the train as it continued on. A left to Electra where there was a southern crosswind slowing it down a bit. stopped at electra for a repair on grips as they were slipping.

After Electra it was a right turn and we had the wind to our back and was feeling good so I pushed it to the high 30's . From there there were a lot of rollers but I didn't have much trouble until after Hell's gate. From that point on with the heat and the wind it has a killer and I had a lot of company that felt the same. Sags were starting to fill up and riders were hiding under any tree they could find for cover. The stop before the base was welcome. I drenched myself in the shower they had. I usually stopped at the base for photo ops at the planes but the heat forced me to the stop to pick up water and continue on high fiving the cadets cheering on the course. A lot of flats as I continued to the finished, I just hoped not to get one myself. I finally finished at 2 with a 11 avg. Rode over to the fire hose and just soaked myself.

I finally got around to posting my report. Today's blog post:

What a difference a year makes! It's been a few years since I had a Hotter 'N Hell Hundred ride that was anywhere near as big a struggle for me as this one was. I don't have a great explanation as to why it happened. I was five pounds heavier than I like to be for this ride. Maybe I pushed myself too hard early, although it didn't feel like it. Perhaps the wind and heat were too much for me, although I've finished well in other hot years. Maybe it's just that if you do this endurance event at a high effort every year, there are going to be years where it doesn't go as well.

I stayed at the First Christian Church again, and enjoyed a Friday dinner at the Bradfords (thanks, Gary and crew). I was on the start line early and maintaining a decent, but not overly fast pace to mile 40. That's where my problems began. I had a flat front tire. I found nothing in the tire, so inserted a new tube and tried to air it up. It wasn't happening. I decided that something must be wrong with my pump, and spend several minutes putzing with it. All the while, a nearby event helper was trying to convince me that I wasn't using my pump right. To any casual observers, it must have looked like an Abbot and Costello routine there beside the road. Finally, I decided it had to be just two bad tubes, and when I tried another tube, I was back in business. I lost a half hour of riding time with that flat from Hell.

Running later than usual now, I wasn't finding as many groups to fall in with as usual. Still, I thought I would finish without further issues until the first leg cramps hit at mile 73. I stopped at the rest stop at mile 75. Past experiences with leg cramps have taught me that you just have to slow down and make more stops than usual, to successfully fight off leg cramps and finish. That tactic did not work well this year. I kept having to stop more often, until from mile 92 to mile 93, I had to stop every tenth of a mile. I was starting to wonder if I was going to be able to finish at all.

It seemed to be alternating legs that would cramp, and the cramps were in my quads, a place where I've never had cramps on a ride before. I finally figured out that if I just unclipped from the pedal, dropped the leg down that was cramping, and made a few pedal strokes with the other leg, I could continue without stopping. I made stops for several minutes at both rest stops past that point, and those nice downhills near the end of the ride helped, but I still struggled all the way to the end.

I really should have sagged in. And it would have been easy to do, starting at around mile 85. The sag truck kept passing me. It would pass, then as it was stopped to pick up a rider, I would pass it. This happened four times. It felt like the sag truck was a buzzard, circling me. As slow as I was moving, I probably looked to them like I was circling the drain. Hard head that I am, I kept riding.

Today (September 1st, a week later), I finally got around to stopping by mychiptime.com and checking my time. My official finish time for this year is 7:09. Oddly, my time for last year was also on the site. That struck me as strange, because my last year's time never showed up for the several days I was checking for it right after the ride last year. But today, there it is: 5:04. That means I was two hours and five minutes slower this year than last year. What a difference a year makes! Am I now officially too old to ride a respectable time at HHH? I'm thinking that it's more likely that that old saying is true: Some days, you're the windshield, some days, you're the bug. This year, I was the bug.

I ended up with 585 miles total for the month of August, a decent mileage total for me, but apparently not enough to properly train for HHH.
