Tires and miles
May 30th, 2016, 5:04pm

I'm curious how many Miles I should expect on a set of GP4KII's before swapping them out.  I have 7k on my rear and 5.3k on my front.  Neither tire shows any visible issues, I haven't been riding long so I honestly don't know what to expect and have not put this many miles on a tire to date.

I realize there are many variables that should be considered in this question, so let me say the front has never flatted, the rear has one.  I run flat attack and mr tuffy liners in both, you see I hate flats as not only do they disrupt my ride but they frustrate me beyond imagination.  Some weight weenies will say that I'm weighing down the bike but as long as I can ride the speeds I do I'm not going to worry about a few extra grams of "flat resistance".  Both wheels have the original tubes as the rear sealed itself when the flat occurred and that is why I like flat attack.

Your thoughts are appreciated.

I run the same tires on my road bike 23mm width.  I last changed the rear out in preperation for the HHH @ 3300 miles (I'm 220-230 lbs) when the sidewall was showing some of the casing and had a decent sized cut in it, wear indicators were barely visible, tire was very squared off.

I'd say you got some decent mileage out of those tires.  There are wear indicators in them (two little indented circles in the middle of the tread).  Are they still visible?  Just curious.  Either way as long as the sidewall still looks good, no casing is showing and you aren't getting many flats I'd say you are probably good with them.  My plan is to toss the rear, move the front to the rear and put a new tire on the front but I seem to always have an issue with the sidewall getting cut so I never make it that far.  YMMV

Thanks Tony

Forgot about the wear indicators, checked them this morning and they are still there on both tires.  I can see where they are wearing and starting to square somewhat but hey I figure they still have another 500-1000 miles in them.

Hey Joe, like I always say, get your moneys worth. I don't really worry about the miles but agree with Tony. Plus I gauge my replacement after wear indicators are done and when the total flats per tire is 4. I also use flat attack and liners. My .02 cents.

I've got some Big Schwalbe Apple Tires on my Typhoon. I've noticed this weekend, that the center is already worn smooth.
I've maybe at best put 1K on the tires.
Is this typical or just these aren't the greatest tires?

I have no experience with the big apple but wonder about your tire pressure.  Wear at the center of the tire is often an indication of over inflation.

The street we live on is a 1/2 mile square circle with one way in/out, so in the evenings when we ride it's  100 yards of flat then turn. Slow climb for +200 yards. 100 yards downhill, then we arc through the curve on the end of the downhill, so maybe that is encouraging more wear. I just didn't know if the tires were supposed to wear that quick.

Big apple (20") are not high pressure tires ..  55 PSI max, but really they prefer 45-50 ..   You should get plenty of miles out of them,  at least 5-7k
