my shins are a bloody, battered pulp!!! (Read 2903 times)

reever rbent member Posts: 459	my shins are a bloody, battered pulp!!! Apr 24^th, 2014, 12:16pm !!!! I keep hitting my shins on the handlebars of my musashi!!! It will happen out of the blue.....a bump and WHAM there goes one of my shins up and into the bar! Any ideas on how to keep me from bleeding to death on these rough roads out here in Abilene?

Yep, add some shims to the riser to raise the handlebar. I had the same problem when I started riding the rough roads around here, after my move to Gun Barrel City. The handlebar height that had worked for so many years on the Corsa wasn't high enough for these roads. So, when I set up the new F5, I made a point of leaving the handlebar higher. Bar tape does help too, better to bump that than a metal handlebar.

The steerer tube on my Musashi is surrounded by a 107 mm long sheath with a 5mm spacer between its top and the bottom of the stem clamp. The handle bar could not be raised with spacers, unless the steerer tube could be lengthened. Once the steerer tube is cut to length, the handlebar can only be adjusted down (by cutting the steerer tube and the sheath). One way the handlebars could be raised would be to remove the Musashi's stem and steerer tube sheath and install a 1-1/8" RANS long riser (cut down to achieve desired shin-to-handlebar clearance) and a headset adjuster clamp. I have seen one Musashi with this particular modification. The Musashi handlebar diameter at the stem clamp is 26 mm. Probably not going to fit the 25 mm clamp on a RANS forged curved riser, so a RANS handlebar would probably have to be used (Try the Musashi handlebar before ordering a RANS handlebar). Mike Librik at Easy Street Recumbents in Austin would be the expert on adjusting the height of Musashi handlebars, as he has built up a number of Musashis from frame kits. You might give him a call.

Kept wrecking my knees on the handlebars but couldn't raise them because it put them into my line of sight. Mike (Easy Street) got the problem fixed for me. Give him a call as he can often talk you through a problem over the phone.

A spacer stack would be used between the extender clamp and the stem clamp.

The first thing I didn't like about the Musashi was the handle bars hitting my knees and poking me in the gut. So the next time I was at Easy Streets Mike had a Musashi with Volae handle bars and wow they make a difference in leg room.
