anybody doing 24 hours in the canyon?
Apr 16th, 2014, 8:58pm

Signed up yesterday for 24 hours in the canyon. Anybody other laid back riders from rbent going up there?

Adults should have fun so kids will want to grow up!

For every mile of road there's two miles of ditch.

I'd rather be sorry for something I did than for something I didn't do.

Hey Greg.....glad to know you guys will be there! I registered for the 24 hour thing, but as yet I have not gotten any feedback on whether or not the registration was successful. I'm getting a little antsy about it because they have posted on the website that spots are going, going, almost gone. And my charge.......I'd just like to see where in the ether my credit card info went.

Email or text Ryan.  He's real fat about getting back to you.  Very cool guy.  Have you got crew lined up?

I'm in! Got an email from Ryan yesterday. My crew is my wife. Do you think I'll need more than just her? How about you guys? How do you handle that if both of you are going for 24?

Not sure about the road side of things (the year I was there got hailed out), but for the mtn bike side it was easy to self support.  Knowing Ryan that shouldn't be a problem there either, so 1 crew should work.

Are they still taking the 24 hour racers out of the park for the first section, that hill is a bit of a pain.

Afaik they are, Bryan.  Jim, so long as she can stay awake, you're good with just her.Chris Young and I only had two crew for the RAO, which was 41 hours.

I dunno how Alexis and I are going to do it.  I'd like to trash my own record but I need someone to hand off and mix bottles to do it.  Alexis had always been my crew, but I was stupid and talked her into racing!   Smiley

I was looking on Dan Hansen's website and he plans to walk his bike up the hill and out of the park. He's doing the first part of the race in running shoes just for that reason. I don't plan on riding up that hill myself, but I'm not going to do 100 miles in running shoes. I've got a pair of sandals that have clips on them that I've been wearing lately to see how they might work. The clips on them are sort of recessed so the rubber sole touches the ground. I think I could wear them for 100 and then switch if I wanted to into my other shoes.

I guess my wife will be drinking all of my monster drink so she can stay awake.......... Smiley

That hill isn't that bad, really its not.

If the sandals don't work for you, look into mountain bike shoes.  I'm assuming that you are using mtn bike style pedals, such as Candy Canes or Eggbeaters on your bike.  Spend time both riding and walking the bike in them, you don't want to discover that you get a blister 1/2 way up the hill, that would make for a very long day.

If Brian says the hill is not bad, be prepared to flipping walk.  If you were planning a hike in hell, he would tell you to wear a jacket.   Smiley Smiley

We might have to borrow your wife!

Actually I'm going to be carrying really light weight running shoes in the back F-40 storage area (lots of room there). I'll change out my speed play bike shoes for the running shoes at the bottom of the hill, walk the hill, then put the speed plays back on.

Looking at the strava segment results for the various slower riders this would put me at the back of the pack but easily doable in under 20 minutes (the slowest time).

I'm just doing the 'race' to have some fun and enjoy a new experience. I talked Ryan into creating a special HPV category for the F-40, so unless a Quest shows up I'm good  Smiley

I'll be practicing the running shoe technique on local hills around Georgetown to see if it is worth the trouble, or if I might actually be able to haul the F-40 with it's over-weight engine up that climb.

Dan, I peek in on what you are doing on a regular basis and I really respect what you say. You seem to always do your homework. I have driven that hill up and out of the park, and my wife and I have ridden our Screamer at least partway up it. I just don't want to start a 24 hour trip in oxygen debt!

And as for my wife......she is a teacher, and she will have just ended her school year. I am not expecting too much from her. I think she will spend much of the time getting a much deserved rest. We will just have to hang loose and play everything by ear.

I hear you on that! I figure it I can actually get up that hill, even just walking, at high noon, on probably a really hot day, then I'm doing really good. I don't really like to start a 99 mile ride with a 1 mile walk up a hill like that - but there you go.

And as for my wife......

Yes, my wife Robyn will be resting at the AirStream sipping drinks and on phone standby. If I get in serious trouble I'll call her to come get me and DNF. And that is my whole 'crew'. I guess I qualify as an ultra-long distance racer - just not a really serious one.

For me this is like any other supported charity century ride - just relax and take my time to get back into the canyon before dark. Take enough water for 3 hours of riding (100oz) and enough food for the whole 100 miles. Top off the water at every stop just to make sure I don't run out.

If it was a sane start I'd do it.  Start at 7am and I'm there.   I'm not staying at midnight.
