East Texas State Park Cycling Tour, Mar 30 - Apr 3
Feb 27th, 2014, 5:56pm

Based on a tour we did in 2009, Ken, Vicky and I are putting together another East Texas State Park cycling tour.

It will be a 5 day/4 night semi-self supported tour with overnight camping at 3 parks, Daingerfield (first and last nights), Caddo and Atlanta. It is scheduled for Sunday, March 30 - Thursday, April 3.  We will start at Winnsboro, where we can leave the cars in the police parking lot.  Each day's ride is between 40 and 45 miles.  Vicky will be driving our Mazda 5 mini-van.  We will have room to carry stuff; how much depends on how many go on the tour.  Each person is responsible for their meals and snacks, however we can pick up dinners, etc. using the car.  We will share the cost of the camping sites (which should total less than $50) and other incidentals such as firewood.

Please respond to this posting or e-mail me if you are interested.

Smiley  Any chance of this changing weeks?  I think it would turn into an indefinite bike tour for me if I was gone over the wife's birthday.   Smiley Maybe I'll be super nice this weekend then ask.

The wife must not like me as much as I thought - she doesn't seem to care.  Now just to make sure work isn't going to get in the way.  Go ahead and count me as a definite maybe!  By the way - are DF bikes allowed? Smiley

Good point - anyone got a trailer I can borrow?  I guess I shouldn't assume the sag can haul all my stuff.

Yes, this is the ride that was rained out at Atlanta SP.  It is great you can join us.

We are talking about meeting at 9 or 10.  Last time we left at 10.  It is a 40 mile ride to Dangerfield SP.  What do you think?

It depends on how many people go and how much stuff you have.  We have a small minivan in which we will be carrying an Anora trike.

So what is everyone planning to do for meals?  My preference is to buy something and bring some things that don't need cooking (I don't have any cooking equipment).  Didn't know if I would be the odd man out on dinner.  Anybody have a gear list they can send me so I can see what I am missing?

I have a Burley you can borrow.  It has had the kid seating removed for  cargo hauling.  Would be best with a 1/4" plywood floor added or coroplast.  Also probably should swap out tires for reliability (you would keep any tires you put on it.  Just give us back the old ones.  Let me know if you want to take a look at it.

We are discussing meals.  Last time Vicky cooked all the the breakfasts and dinners.  Although she is willing to do it again, I would prefer she only cooks the dinner in Atlanta, due to its distance from the nearest town.  We have cooking equipment.

For breakfast I am thinking of heating up water for people to use for their oatmeal, hot chocolate, etc.  Or we could pick up a snack the previous day, such as a honey bun, and then eat breakfast in the nearest town, which is what Ken has done on his past tours.

For lunch we will eat at a fast food place.

For dinner we can take the car to get something like pizza, or pick up food at a grocery store.

We should have room for a small cooler, if you want to bring one.

I can send you our gear list, if you send me your e-mail address.

Sounds good Richard -  If I can bribe your wife into hauling a small cooler for me then I can bring milk - I'd just eat cold cereal every morning unless others wanted to get breakfast in town.  One of my biggest fears on the trip is to be starving all the time - it is probably unrealistic though.

Jerry, Iwould rather leave early that camp out, BUT if you camp, Winnsboro has a city R.V. park in town at the park. Remember staying there when on the 10 day ride?

I went on line and found this address for the Police Dept:  501 S Main St, Winnsboro, TX 75494,  (903) 342-3654.  Does this agree with the information you have, Ken?

I have electronic maps and directions of the route we will be taking.  If you want them, please e-mail me and I will send it to you.  They are the same as the last tour with the exception of Atlanta to Dangerfield (which we never rode).  This one uses the bicycling route recommended by Google.

If there is anyone interested in going, but not cycling, Vicky would enjoy the companionship.

I have some bad news.  Our oldest cat is very sick, bone cancer.  Vicky feels she should stay with her, so unless our cat's condition changes, Vicky won't be coming on the tour.   It looks like it will be a self supported tour.

So, I tested out my new trailer carrying 25 lbs, riding 3 laps around White Rock lake today.  It pulls nicely, but I noticed the extra weight.

Good News!   Smiley  I just checked with Texas State Parks on the use of my Annual Pass to get us bicyclists into the park.  Up to 6 bicyclists may come in under an Annual pass.  Here is what the website says:  "If entering by boat, bicycle, or on foot, the pass holder may be accompanied by as many as five additional guests who are entering by the same means as the pass holder."

This saves each of us from paying the $4 or $5 entrance fee for each park, although we must still pay for the campsite.
