Populaire at RBM Oct. 27
Sep 29th, 2013, 12:33pm

It has all changed.  I will still host a populaire Sunday, October 27, starting at 08:45, but NOT lot at Richardson BikeMart.  The route was too badly damaged.  No fee or membership is required, but a waiver must be signed.  The Sunday start was suggested by our RBA, as we hope to minimize traffic in the city.  Expect a fresh, beautiful Autumn day.  Get a taste of randonneuring, and perhaps meet some club members.  More as the date gets nearer.

Did they change the R-12 requirement?  I thought it was still a full 200k for it to count towards the R-12, and the P-12 was 100k+

Dadgummit, I always confuse this.  The R-12 is 200K or longer and the P-12 is 100k-199k.  Thanks for correcting me.

You should try it, LSR is a rather interesting group of riders.

For those who haven't had any introduction to Randonneuring, a populair ride is a shorter distance ride than most Brevets (normal rando rides are 200/300/400/600k) designed to sucker new riders into long distance self supported riding (Ooops, I mean introduce new riders to ...).  All Brevets, Permanents and Populaires have both an upper speed and lower speed that they must be ridden at.  The limits tend to create camaraderie on the ride, instead of the "I will bury you" feeling that some club rides create.

Note: Time changed to 08:45, per Dan Driscoll.  Apparently due to a request from Jim H. at Bikemart.

What controls will you be using for this ride, if it's the route I remember there has been some issues in the past with the turn-around control being closed.

Glad you brought it up!  That control is open under new management, but control #2 is closed.  Also, the Dubya Tollway closed the road out and the road back!  Major surgery will be required to get the route usable again.  In the mean time, I'm considering Bobcat Bite or Beanstalk as an alternate.

I was wondering about control 2 as well, rode by it the other day and it looked dark.  I was planning on checking on the way back, but it was pouring so we didn't stop.  That's a shame, since it used to be a good route, and a good way to introduce riders from the LBS to randoneuring.  I'd suggest Marco Polo, another good ride that starts inner city, but they keep adding to the construction zone on Hwy 78.

Interesting.  I don't recall seeing Marco Polo on the RUSA list.  Anyway, I've decided on Bobcat Bite, starting in Celina.  I'll repost later with more information.

I spelled it wrong, it's Marko Polo.  170k route that sadly includes going over the 78 bridge between Wylie and Lavon.  It was my introductory ride to LSR (I had heard of Randoneurring while I lived in Austin, but never did one), and where I met Shellene.  Little did I know how much one ride would change my life.

There are stretches on 75, 377, and 289 that have high speed limits.  These roads ave generous shoulders, though, and the main thing is to be careful getting on.  FM121 has fast traffic, but it is sparse, the surface is good, and visibility is good.  Most of the other roads are quiet, small town or country roads.  A couple of them have condition issues.  Not much chip seal, though.  Official distance is 64.3 miles.

Oh, my goodness, 121 is my playground, it's so much fun because there are fewer lights and you just go as fast as you wish.  There is less imbecilic behavior from the motorons, because the speeds are too fast for them to investigate.  Also, since the tollway was put in, the grades have been lessened.  Just a blast.
