Protecting your Average Speed on your Garmin
Aug 14th, 2013, 1:24pm

John, (FlyingLaZBoy), and I were talking about the GPS and he mentioned that it's possible to change the speed at which the thing turns itself on and off.  "What?!"  I never thought of that.  He said folks on pay rides do it all the time to protect their averages.  Well, after poking around for a while, I finally found it.  It's probably common to all Garmins, and may even be on other machines.  Here's how to do it on an 800:

From the main menu:
Click on settings, (the box wrench at bottom right)
Click on Bike Settings, Auto Pause, Custom Speed
Set the speed you want to have the timer turn on/off.

May be "duh" info for most, but I would have appreciated it to see it here, myself.
Thanks, John!

You protect your average with tire skidding stops at intersections (or no stops at all), jack rabbit starts, and never riding with your slower buddies.  You may be thought a jerk, but you'll know everyone is impressed.  I know I am when some guy finishes behind me with an 18 mph average!   Smiley

Seriously, though, for your regular rides, wouldn't you want to know if you were improving your overall speed, not just your bookkeeping?  In Bikejournal, I just use the distance/time calculator, anyway.

No, not really.  I'd rather have my actual riding tell the story, not how I start from a light that's turned green, because I often have to wait for full speed until the cars around me establish their flow.  They often won't go because they want to see the trike perform.  If I take off immediately, there we are like a cloud moving down the street.
I don't want the timer to turn on if I am just rolling around a parking lot, or portaging from one point to another, such as crossing the streets on the Denton Rail Trail. (Video soon) For serious riders, the option makes sense.

I set mine to turn off at less than 4 mph. There are hills that I pedal at less than 5 mph, so that seemed too high.

That's appropriate.

The key would be to know how you ride and set it accordingly, mine has never gone off except at stop signs and lights.  I do watch it on steep climbs just to make sure that I don't drop below 5 and turn it off.  The resume feature is very quick to pick back up as well.

I wouldn't fret too much about the "cheating" part of it.  Even if you have it set to turn off under x mph the Garmin still shows your regular avg speed (not the "cheating" speed) - at least my 705 does.  In addition, you get both speeds on Garmin connect and it uses the lower avg speed when it runs reports and shows it in the listing of rides.  On my typical rides in traffic I usually get a .1 mph boost to my avg by setting it to turn off if under 5mph.  And besides slow vs. slow + .1mph isn't really gonna impress anyone.

Now if I forget to turn off the GPS and drive home that might really turn some heads!

Yes, it's easy enough to get your overall time and speed. Setting the Garmin to turn off at almost stopped speeds lets it do a nice job of showing you your "on the bike" average speed for a given ride.
