No Wonder It Was On Sale
Mar 30th, 2013, 8:44pm

Bought a 175 mm FSA Gossamer triple crankset on sale at Nashbar for $90. Spent several hours shortening the crank arms to 150 mm. Was ready to install it on my Carbent, when I discovered the bottom bracket wouldn't fit on the shaft that is a part of the right crank arm assembly. The new BB easily fit on the shaft of the FSA crankset I had removed from the Carbent. Measured the ID of the BB bearings and the OD of the shaft and found them to be exactly the same. Thus, the reason the bearings don't fit on the shaft. The next step would normally be to return the crankset to Nashbar, however, the warranty states: "Any attempt to modify the product in any way such as drilling (I did that), grinding (I did that), and painting will void the warranty." D'oh! Watch out for those sale items at Nashbar. I ordered a carbon crankset from them that was on sale and found out after I received it that it was NOS, old technology, and weighed more than the modern all-aluminum crankset I was going to replace. I only buy sale items at Nashbar, because they add state sales tax. Going to have to be more careful in the future.

That's as far as the BB will go.

It's now been over 5 years since I've found anything worthy of buying at Nashbar. It's not the Nashbar it used to be. I'd shop elsewhere.

Probably good advice.

I got pedals recently, and sale pants.  They still carry some old-fashioned bits for the classic bike people.

Was able to salvage the crankset by pressing the hollow shaft out of the spider, mounting it between centers on my lathe, and reducing the diameter of both bottom bracket bearing seats by 0.001" with a file.

Filing oversize BB bearing seats down.

Pressing shaft back into spider with hydraulic press.

Yea, the BB fits on the shaft!

Ready to roll.

I am hugely impressed. Very nice work.  Smiley

By the way, I DO have 9 in back on the Musashi (11 - 34)  and twist shifters.

Looks like Mike must have built up your Musashi from a frame kit, rather than modifying a factory-built bike.
