NOTE: Sat Aug 4, RIDE STARTS AT BICYCLES PLUS, MACARTHUR AND BELT LINE, 8AM rollout -- see post further down for details.

I'm contemplating an RBENT gathering for Saturday August 4th, for a special purpose... but need to check some things first. Kindly hold that morning open on your schedules for a bit... Probably looking at a 7:30 (yawn) rollout, to beat the heat a bit... followed by a brunch.

OK -- the date is ON... but the route and location aren't set quite yet. What this IS, is an RBENT group gathering to actually honor Steve (and Peggy) Petty on being crazy enough to do the RAAM event... Undoubtedly the first local RBENT representatives (apart from Sandy Earl, of course, but she's not local!) to attempt this particular bit of cycling lunacy -- and yes, John Schlitter is an honorary RBENTer, but he isn't local, either! I had to check with Steve and Peggy to see if they could MAKE it that day, natcherally!!!!

The concept for the gathering is to do a morning ride (of a couple different speeds and distances), then go eat somewhere, where Steve and Peggy will regale us with tales of their RAAM experience, good, bad, or ugly. I'm thinking that we'll meet somewhere Coppell / DFW Airport area and do a ride, but I'm having a hard time finding a place to go afterwards that serves an affordable breakfast/brunch that can seat a group...

SO -- give me a few more days to make this more concrete, but please make plans to attend, Sat Aug 4, for a 7:30AM rollout -- yeah, it's early, but I want to beat the (potential) heat!!! There is no "rain date" scheduled at the moment...

If there is a beginner route, I'll talk Kim into it somehow. It's all about leaving the kids for such a long time with no quick easy way back if something happens...I'll work on a kid watcher!

OK, after cogitating on this for a while, I realized that the 3 ride distances created last year out of Coppell should lend themselves nicely to this... The only thing really lacking is a place to go eat afterwards for a significant-sized group. There's an IHOP down at MacArthur and 635, but it may be crowded on a Saturday... So, what the heck, let's ride.

Meet at the Bicycles Plus in Coppell/ValleyRanch, on MacArthur just north of Belt Line -- 7:30 for socializing and prep, 8:00AM rollout, we should be finished by around 10:30.... We'll all ride together down to the Shell Station at 114 (6 miles), then split off for different distance/speed groups, then all meet back at the start. Once we get back, we can figure out the best way to have Steve and Peggy talk a bit about RAAM!!!

ROUTES HAVE CHANGED -- SEE POST ON AUGUST 2 -- PB

Terrie and I will be "leading" the shorter version, on the Margarita Machine. I'll be fishing for a couple of other ride leaders for the other two route options!!! I think Dave Rothgeb may be available to lead one version...

Address is 817 S Macarthur Blvd Ste 125, Coppell, TX 75019. I called and they open at 11am on Saturdays. There is an outside patio and room inside.

ROUTE CHANGES FOR SATURDAY'S RIDE

I've modified the route for the first section -- we will all ride together for the first 10 miles, first touring a bit through Valley Ranch, then out to the Shell Station at Royal and 635, then split from there into a 27-mile (total) group and two 36-mile(total) groups. The 27 mile route is pretty flat -- NO WORRIES!!! One of the 36 mile groups (Clockwise around DFW) will have a tough climb along 161 -- the other (CCW halfway around DFW) will be much easier. The two 36-mile groups may well meet at the south end of DFW -- I might suggest meeting up at the bus transfer station there for a mutual rest stop, then riding the rest of the way around DFW and back to MacArthur together!!!

All groups are intended to be "No Drop" - you simply choose. The 26-mile group is DEFINITELY no drop, and there is a shorter mileage cutoff option available. The intent of the shorter route is to roll at roughly 12-14mph down the road... And again, for the first 10 miles out to the Shell station, the intent is for EVERYBODY to ride together at a casual pace, just mixing it up. You have the option of returning to the start after the break at the Shell, which is only about 6 miles.

Even the harder 30+ mile route isn't really intended to be a "haul a**" pace -- we're out to enjoy the morning, get some exercise, and meet new friends and reconnect with old ones...
