650c Folding Tire Recommendation
May 4th, 2012, 9:32pm

Shopping for a folding tire to take with me on my ride across Oklahoma.  I ride with Continental Gatorskins and like them so far.  Anybody have one they like?

I have heard good things about the Continental Grand Prix 4000 but it is over twice the price of the Kenda Kaliente and I'm not sure it is worth it.  Looking for a good tire with excellent flat protection and I hope to never have to use it.  The ride is only about 500 miles so it doesn't have to wear really well.  I just don't want to have to end my week long trip early because I was too cheap to bring along a spare tire.  Especially since I'm running 650s in a world of 700s.

I've put plenty of miles on both the Gatorskins and GP 4000, and would highly recommend either of them as a backup.

I can't find the gator skins in 650 folding. I don't think the make them -- or am I just missing it?

Kalientes don't wear well at all. I like the Michelin Pro Race 3's.

I second the Conti Gp4000's or Michelin Pro Race 3's  that Bryan and Bud suggest.  With a slight edge to the Contis as they have worn better for me that the Michelins.   --Nelson.

Conti GP 4000's. Stay away from the Kenda Kaliente tires.

Are the Terrys foldable?

My understanding is they are repackaged Panaracers - a good thing IMHO.

Tony,

You could strap your wire bead on the back of your seat like an AWACS! That would look gooooood.

Everyone I've heard from who's owned the Terry's says they measure a lot smaller than 28mm.

Bud, when I was riding 650's, I rode Terry's for about 6/7 months. I never measured the Terry's, but for the rough Texas chip seal, the wider Terry's did make a difference. Daniel Schaaf rides Terry's all the time. If not mistaken, I believe they are a folding tire (I can't remember).

The Terry Telus is wire bead, so not as tightly foldable as a kevlar bead.  I would say in practice that the width is closer to 26-27.  They are a great option if they fit.  Wouldn't fit on my Corsa, but do on the TiAero.

I've ridden tellus tires and would highly recommend them, but as Nelson said they won't fit the Corsa.  I ride them on my Xstream and CA2.0

(sorry this has nothing to do with a folding tire)

I recently employed some Serfas 650x28. They are $30 each and are sold only from Rodriguez bikes.

I can tell a big difference in the cushion department over the Gator 23's.
