busted wheel
Apr 30th, 2012, 7:15pm

Well I about to ride the second shift at WRL and checked the spokes of the rear of the x stream. It was like seein your old girlfriend with her new boyfriend....spoke nipple pulled right out of the rim with a couple of more cracked. I ran down to RBM and mech. said they could lace up another rim. So I'm going with that for now.  This is the second rim I've busted. They are Jalco DRX 4000's.  I dont think Rans has had any recalls with them, just my bad luck.

On an Xstream, most of the weight is on the rear wheel. After a second failure, I think I would stop calling it bad luck and consider moving to a wheel with more spokes.

Run a fatter tire in the rear once you get your new wheel--that may help some too.

I still hear the sirens of the golden arches calling me, my poor wheel bears the pain.

I busted the rear wheel on my V-3, think the Jalco 4000 just will not carry the weight I am putting on it. If anymore problems I am going to a 26. Smiley

Lots of 650C's aren't very tough. And Monkeywrangler's suggestion of fatter tires doesn't work, either, unless you change to 559 wheels. No one makes fatter 650C tires.

Racing bicycle wheels are made for 140 pound riders anyway, and don't hold up to heavy riders. Low spoke count wheels especially don't like heavier riders. I've had great luck with 650C 28 spoke Velocity Nuvian and Helios wheelsets. Both have been bombproof for me (a set of Nuvians and a set of Helios have done all but a few hundred miles of the almost 18,000 miles on my Corsa, and both are still in good shape; I replaced the Nuvians after my chain fell inside the cassette and damaged the spokes on the rear wheel), but I'm ~185 pounds. I don't know that they would hold up so well for someone 200+ pounds.

EDIT: Looking at my bikejournal log for July, 2006, which is when I bought the Corsa (with the Nuvians on it), I weighed 194 pounds at that time. So those wheels might be up to a 200 pounder.

I switched over to 559's on my XStream and haven't looked back...I'm very pleased with them. If your Xstream is like mine, the brake pad mounts have slotted holes in them so they'll work with either a 559 or a 650 wheel. The rolling diameters are much the same between the two sizes - the 559 rim is a little smaller in diameter, which allows for more tire section height. I used a Velocity Synergy Offset rim with 32 spokes for the back wheel. On the front I used regular Velocity Synergy rim, also with 32 spokes. My normal setup is 85 psi rear and 70 psi front for a nice comfy ride. If I want to go as fast as I can go, I up the pressure to 100 psi in both tires. If my new setup is any heavier than the factory 650's, I can't tell it (I never did weight either wheel). They sure do ride smooth. I've been running these wheels since last September, and they still run incredibly true and smooth. If I were a weight weenie, I might have done something different...like choose a lighter wheelset, and diet 35 lbs off of the pilot. I have an aero belly, so I should be faster than Jay... but I'm not. What's up with that?

PS...If anybody wants the 650 wheels that came on my XStream, I'll make them a very good price.

Those Jalcos you like so much. Jalco DRX4000 with Novatec hubs and bladed spokes. 24 spokes front, 28 spokes rear, 650C size. Seemed like nice enough wheels, just too small a tire size for my preference.
