up grade the V3
Jul 28th, 2010, 9:22pm

I have the V3 and love it.  I want to upgrade the shifters, derailers, and crankset.  I was thinking about going with sram X0 parts.  I was going to look on Ebay and when I got a good deal then pick up an item.  I noticed that the rear derailer comes in 3 sizes.  I think the V3 is a long.   I can't find any information on it.    I can get X9 parts a whole lot cheaper is the X0 a whole lot better I know they are a little lighter but I am not a speed demon and never will be.  I have some X9 parts in the garage from a friend who upgraded his road bike.

I'd suggest staying with the X9...  If you were going for the lightest possible bike for racing purposes like the Xstream prototype was, the X0 would make sense -- but you've got a steel frame V3 with disc brakes!  I've also heard a couple random comments about "aluminum screws that wear out" on the X0, but I can't verify that rumor.  But I'm guessing the X9 will be somewhat hardier by comparison, without significant weight penalty.  Save your bucks...

If you need specs for the derailleur, send an email to  carlb@rans.com  and tell him what you're dealing with.

It is a long cage. I will say that that is a new X7 and it made a huge improvement. I had bought a X9 on ebay and it was bad from the factory so watch the ebay thing. The low end trim screw was out of wack. He is right on the X9 stuff, way more bang for the buck and stronger. The X0 is just a little lighter but not as strong, and if you happen to go down on that side it will snap. The way I figured it I have lost 40,000 bucks in bike weight at 45 lbs so the ultra light stuff would not be the best bang for the buck. LOL

Thanks Jason   I think I will just stick with the X9.  Even if I had a 20 lb bike I don't have the engine to push it.  I just want a bike that is nice and smooth.

Another question I see the specs on the differenct chains but what is the best chain and where do you order it.  It appears most chain is just too short for my recumbent and I would have to piece it together.

Terracycle cuts chain to length

Hostel Shoppe has 11 and 14ft lengths
9 speed

6/7/8

Possibly others do too. Last chain I got for the hurricane was actually 3 951s from my lbs. Haven't had any problems with it or the 951 11ft chain I got from hostel before. I did really hose up the 991R that came with the bike when I got it.

RANS lists chain lengths in inches for the V3 as 124 for the standard frame, 134 for the XL...  http://www.ransbikes.com/XSeam.htm

I have x-9 trigger shifters and long cage derailleur here.  They are low miles, I forget what I had them on, but I'm thinking they were on my Fuji for a short bit.    I have no idea what they are worth, but would make a pretty decent deal on it.

Brad, Dave Rothgeb might be interested in those -- he just bought the StratusXP from Thomas, and Thomas had put a 7-speed shifter and cassette on the bike for whatever reason - and Dave said he has lighter wheels and an XTR that he would probably put on it.

Are trigger shifters that useful of an idea on a V3 or StratusXP?  Not sure if it's more or less convenient than twist shifters...

I have been using trigger shifters on all my bikes only the bents came with twist.  I find I will twist and shift when I don't want too.   All our police bikes have trigger shifters.   We ordered 6 more S & W bikes for use in the downtown area.

I now have the rear derailer and trigger shifters for the upgrade.   Brad fixed me up.   I also have the crankset and BB.   Now all I need is the chain and some spare time to change it all out.  If it works out and I like the upgrade I will do the same for the SXP
