BAM Bike Around Midlothian 100k
Jul 24th, 2010, 1:52pm

This was the inaugural ride and it was pretty good, the 100k route was a loop around the north/west/south of Midlothian with mostly good roads with a few very steep hills (like the Paluxy Pedal they have their own version of "The Wall").

Only complaint is a few busy intersections that had no traffic control and the 100k had a very bad bridge where one rider wrecked and went off to the side, with all the emergency vehicles there it couldn't have been good. Overall a much better ride than some of the others in that area.

Rider count was maybe 700-800 and the only bent I saw was a Bacchetta, where was everybody?

In my case it was the killer hills bragged about on the Ride's website. Too hot for this kind of torture.   Tongue

I rode the 45 mile route and had a great time.  I met Joanne and her husband, John, who also rode.  I met some other folks that I think were members of RBENT, but forgot their names.

Below is a picture I took of Joanne coming into a rest stop.

Mark, It was great to meet you! Ended up with 48 miles after that first little detour. I don't know if someone turned the wrong way and a bunch of us followed or the escort turned us wrong. All I know is a there was mass confusion at the start. It was a pretty good ride overall though. Had a great time.

I forgot to mention I was so caught up trying to overtake a rider on the north route I failed to notice he (and I) missed the Valley View turnoff, went about a mile or more before we both figured out the mistake which is why my ride finished at 67.5 instead of 65. I had no problems with the start although one traffic cop apparently forgot we were coming and had to rush out to let us through going north. They also had almost no crowd control going through downtown.

One guy in the front pack asked how well my bike climbed hills, I replied not very well and he then said "You're going to love Valley View", I blew it off at the time but "The Wall" brought me back to reality Smiley

If they keep it going it'll be an area "must ride"

I think I passed both of you on the route south, I liked how the 45 mile route rejoined early, usually on the 100k the riders are so spread out after 20-30 miles you are all alone.

Was that you in the yellow jersey and yellow shorts that went flying by?  I don't know enough about Bents yet to know the models when I see them.
