Don't let evblazer test ride your bike :-)
Apr 24th, 2010, 5:39pm

First thanks for picking up that oregon in austin and setting it up all nice Nelson  Wink I do like it and after being up till 3 last night and then spending all day making balloon animals for the animal shelter open house I should have an easy time talking my wife into getting it.
So thinking of letting people test ride your bike.. Think again  Smiley
It was a pretty nice test ride. If I recall correctly I thought the power side pulley seemed slightly not straight but didn't think much of it. Took it out on the wednesday evening ride which wasn't too well attended and not exactly an a b or even c group but I had an overly easy time of blowing past everyone at well over 20mph and even up some pretty decent hills. Put in about 32 miles and only skipped one overly hilly section because I have to take it easy but the oregon was flyin'.
After the ride my wife went for a jog so I was just riding around a little with her. Stopped in a golf cart crossing and a bunch of folks stopped to wave me through while they were on a 35mph road. What? They don't have a stop sign and were stupidly holding up traffic ugh. Oh well I stepped on it and all I heard was something whiz across the ground and the chain fall off.

Sheered off the flange of the vbelt pulley. Note the pulley should be about 3/8" or so from the frame not on it.
The bolt from the oregon is on the right. A cheap hardware store replacement I picked up because I didn't want to used a graded bolt is on the left. The one on the left lasted maybe 100 ft? The middle one is a grade 5 I think and I took it for a brief ride last night and it worked well.

Also working well last night was a non-euro mesh seat.

Planning on getting a terracyle 23 tooth idler someone reports is working well on their oregon along with some rans b-41 bars to get a couple more inches in between the handles and another challenge E XL seat. Too bad the hurricane can't take the rans lock or I could maybe share the seat between the two.

Anyone have a b-41 laying around unused?

Mark my friend you are much stronger than me!  You know I'd been thinking about the Pulley not being straight!  I'm so glad you got a replacement working (currently!).  I don't know about you on the Hurricane, or Mark L. on the Baron, but the gawk factor from observers was way higher while on the Barcroft than any other bike I've ridden.  Do need to get you the replacement pulleys, you know just in case.

My test riding of Ray's Aero has been much less eventful, although a brake pad did fall out this morning.

Take Care,
Nelson.

Nelson that is good news. It is very possible that maybe I just bent it a little more or just rotated the pre-bent bolt. Maybe some previous owner took it to a hammer and anvil to try and reduce pulley contact or had some chain jamming incident where they went big/big with too short a chain. (note: verify with pushed out boom I can go big/big)
I think that chincy bolt from lowes was just a chincy bolt bound to fail so not any mega power coming out of my legs.
I was up late last night and I found that RANs at one point on their tandem had folks bending too small a bolt on the power side idler because of how they had it positioned. No damage to the frame and I think they put in a larger bolt and/or rerouted the chain to fix the issue. I'm thinking on like 2 hours of sleep since thursday but I'm pondering if the power side idler on a twist chain FWD is potentially the most stressed pulley I've seen in any bike design. I'll have to do some diagrams but it seems it would take a beating between the cranks pulling it forward and the cassette pulling it down and a little forward so they are trying to shoot it out like an arrow from a bow.

Greg, did you and Mark ever exchange those bars?  If not I'd like to try them on the Cruzbike conversion currently in testing.

btw if you wanted to borrow the oregons narrow bars we could figure that out. THe original cruzbike bars are trashed sort of but the narrow bars on the oregon were too thin for my comfort so got those bigger ones.

Mark if you are referring to the 'Praying hamster' bars that some have-tried those on another bike-don't like them at all!  Thanks anyway...hopefully will get some more riding time in soon, but the outlook doesn't look good for the weekend... Smiley

The hamster bars were on the hurricane. The Oregon was setup as so:

I'm not sure if they are narrow tweener bars or super narrow ones but I put on the wider bars shown earlier in this thread due to interference with my leg.
