Team Bent Fleche 360K Easter Spectacular!
Apr 4th, 2010, 9:08pm

I'm running on a solid 3 hours sleep so I won't go into detail - I'll leave that other with better memory later on, but here are the basics.  Peggy put together the team of herself, Steve, Bud, myself, and Mark Metcalfe.  The route was one Mark has designed.  A Fleche isn't supposed to end at the same place it starts, so we parked at the end point and rode to the start 7.5 miles away, with hills tougher than the rest of the route.  Nothing like intentional bonus miles.  This made the total ride somewhere in the 380k range.

I had a great time despite some heat rash initially and then nearly falling asleep on the bike the last few controls, but Peggy was right there to pass out jolt gum and talked me awake.  After my wreck last weekend I had some out and out fear of nighttime gravel and holes and such which eventually went away.  But there's nothing like spending 24 hours solid on a bike with good friends.

My memories from the ride:
The scents of wild onions, wisteria, and feed lots (stinky!)
The sound of reed pipes or some sort of flute about 10pm.
Watching Bud perk up once night feel and hitting the front of the group and staying there all night long.
Steve's incessant sign sprinting, even after the 200 mile mark.
Chili dog farts - it's amazing how you can sometimes want crap food on long rides.
Stinkbugs and tailwinds.
2am easter celebration at a post office thanks to Linda Metcalfe.  Great tortilla soup right when it was needed most.

Otherwise my only other comment is how great the xstream performed.  In the current configuration with the RANS 3-ways bars I was extremely comfortable in spite of a still sore back and road rash.  Very surprising considering I had exactly 8 miles on the bike before the ride.  On any other bike I would have had to stop for back and butt and foot pain - that filter foam stuff just decompresses too much with my fat behind on it for more than 15 hours or so. That hoagie seat is awesome and the bike really rolls well.  Handling was a bit tricky at a couple points, but acceptable considering I was having to learn how to ride the bike and all.  I was much better towards the end until I started getting seriously sleepy.

It was a good time, and as usual I'd do it again in a heartbeat with these exact same friends.....but let's wait a week or two for me to recover, can we?   Wink

Special thanks to Peggy and Mark M for organizing this ride. I had a blast. Some hardcore randonneurs might argue that the weather was too great or the route too easy, but it was still a grand adventure for this old f*rt.

As Greg mentioned, we rode 7.5 miles from Lynn Creek Marina to the start of the ride in Duncanville, then at 8:00 am, Saturday, we were off. The route went out to Italy for the second control, then on to Dawson for the next. Winds stayed as light as I think I've ever seen on a long ride, so the southbound part of our ride never turned into the beating that a big headwind can cause.

After another control at Wortham, we arrived at Teague at mile 106, and stopped at a Dairy Queen to eat. Very hungry by that time, I had an extra long chili cheese dog and a blizzard. While I have been known to eat this very unhealthy meal on rare occasions, this was the first time I had ever downed anything this obscene on a randonneuring ride, and it wasn't long before I was reminded why.

I felt like I had a concrete block on my stomach, and was just hanging on for the next 35 miles, through the Donie Post Office control, and on to Mexia. We made a longer stop at Mexia, rigging for darkness before pedaling on, and by the time we left, my stomach had settled. The easier pace because of darkness also helped, I think, and I felt good the rest of the ride.

There are serious time constraints for a fleche. You can't finish too early, nor spend too long at one control. We were somewhat ahead of schedule by the time we arrived at the Hubbard Post Office at mile 164, so it was nap time there, before we moved on.

At Milford at mile 188, Linda M met us with hot food and coffee. I think you have to be a randonneur to really appreciate how great that was at 2:00 am. Thanks, Linda! It was a quicker stop at Maypearl at mile 204, but we spent a good while at the next to last control in Venus, at mile 215.

After a couple of stops for light battery replacements, we arrived at Lynn Creek Marina well within the proper time, and I had completed my first fleche. I had a great time, spending 24 hours riding and cutting up with this group. Mark did a great job with the route. His experience and expertise were obvious, having us on the best roads at the best time to be on them, and telling us what to expect and watch for on the entire route.

With the ride to the start, I ended up with just short of 243 miles, and another great rando adventure was in the books. Thanks for having me along, everyone!

How did you guys feel Sunday and today?  I felt surprisingly aware and able, all things considered.  Still not sure I want to tackle a 600k after all this though.

I slept four hours Sunday morning, then got up and took Rose crappie fishing, so I must not have felt too bad.
