RANS Dual 26" Fork measurement (Read 4616 times)

MrOverdressed Five Star Member rbent member Posts: 569	RANS Dual 26" Fork measurement Jan 6^th, 2010, 11:17am If your bike has a RANS Dual 26" Fork (Stratus XP or V3) with 26' Mtn (ISO 559) rims. Please meause the distance in Millimeters from the TOP of the wheel rim (not the top of the tire) upto the bottom of the forks stearer. I want to know know many millimeters clearance there is.

I'm not sure I want to know why you're asking this....

HOWEVER, in the interest of science, and in the spirit of "measure twice, cut once"...

Note that the edge of the rim and the fork itself are NOT perpendicular in your area of concern. The closest distance from rim to fork crown is at the very front edge of the fork crown, so that's your critical point.

Looks to be right at 2 inches (~50mm) clearance, or slightly less, from rim to fork inside top...

Granted, after four years and 18,000 miles, the wind might have worn some of the thickness off of my SXP fork... YMMV Cheesy

I was using the 559 rim as a reference point to see how much clearance was available for other rim/tire combos. Look like there is enough clearance for a 650C (ISO-571) rim+tire but not a 700C (ISO-522) rim+tire.

1.5 mm is a good bit of clearance but what was that tire? When I ran some 700x23 armadillos on my road bike I could barely shove a piece of paper through there until I sanded down the tire a bit otherwise it would rub when I pedaled really hard. After they started shedding gobs of tread I switched to some 700x23 conti gatorskins and I have lots of clearance so just get a short tire and you'll be great. For brakes if you don't have long enough reach clipers mavic makes a nice Vbrake adjustment horseshoe shaped thingy to move the brakes up from a 26" to a 700" rim which xtracycle used to sell for people who used 700c wheels with their add on kit designed around 26" wheels. Me.. I'd run some nice 26x1.35 kojaks Wink

I've seen those on a few bents hopefully they are stiffer then what dahon uses. My wife has long reach v brakes on her dahon and they really really flex after the pad meets the rim total trash but for almost 160 hopefullty the pauls are better.
The mavic ones I got for about $15 at the LBS are pretty solid and allow you to keep whatever brakes you might already have. Just an option for some who might not know they exist as are those spiffy adjustable brakes.
