Prairie Hill Roundup 200k permanent
Nov 14th, 2009, 7:55pm

At 7:00 am this morning, Steve and I rolled out of Italy to do the Prairie Hill Roundup 200k permanent. Nelson was supposed to join us, but wasn't there at 7:00 am. It turned out that he overslept.

Nelson, who is having knee issues, chose this route because it has a reputation as a fast and easy 200k, just what the doctor ordered for a problem knee, it would seem. But the route wasn't that easy on this day. All but about 30 miles of the route has become boulderseal, and the wind made things tough, too.

The route leaves Italy and heads east, then southeast, to Wortham at mile 53. The wind, which wasn't blowing very hard early, really started to pick up from the SSE by mile 25, which is where I had a flat. After I fixed the flat, and we started to ride away, there was Nelson, riding up behind us.

From Wortham, the route heads WSW to Prairie Hill. Right on cue, the wind changed from SSE to SSW. If the local weather reports here are to be believed, the wind was blowing much harder where we were. Nelson's knee was already bothering him by the time he reached Wortham, and this long stretch against the wind was brutal. By mile 66, Nelson had decided to nurse his knee back to the start by a shorter route, and we parted ways with him. The remaining 10 miles to Prairie Hill, with the roads turning a bit more south, were really tough, and by the time we reached the control there, I was toast. I was glad there wouldn't be hardly any more miles against the wind.

The Prairie Hill control turned out to be Mark M's double secret ice cream stop, and Steve sampled that ice cream, while I ate my peanut butter and honey sandwich. After leaving Prairie Hill, the route soon joins more familiar roads, down FM 339, then FM 308, and US 77 back to Italy. It was much easier sledding on this part of the ride, but I was fried enough that I struggled on every small hill.

With .3 in bonus miles, from a wrong turn the only time I rode out in front of Steve and Nelson, I ended up with 126.0 miles, with an on the bike average of 15.7 mph. I finished in an overall time of 9:30. My Garmin showed 3,600 feet of climbing. We rejoined Nelson for Subway sandwiches at Italy, and called it a day. The wind and boulderseal made it a tough day, but for a November day, it was truly nice, and I always have a blast riding with these two. I hope your knee is better soon, Nelson. Thanks for the ride, y'all!

Yes I managed to make this day interesting right from the start, mis-setting my Alarm clock for 4:30 PM instead of AM and forgetting to un-mute my cell phone after having gone to a movie the night before had me snoozing soundly when Steve came by to pick me up - Very Sorry Steve!

Anyway my wife noticed the time, and asked me what time was I supposed to leave?  Oops laying in bed at 5:48 70 miles from a 7:00 ride start is not good.  So I launched out of bed collected up gear and sped to Italy, managing to get rolling by 7:25 or so, but not expecting to have a chance to catch a speedy Bud and Steve.  Fortunately / Unfortunately Bud had a flat and helped my pursuit to complete successfully.  However not 20 miles further down the road my knee started tuning up.  And after hauling into the wind I decided it was not a good idea to keep pushing, and slowing Steve and Bud down, so told them I was cutting across to Malone and avoiding the direct headwind into Prarie Hill.  Their descriptions of chicken manure fertilizer, headwinds, and boulder seal confirmed I made the correct decision!   I did miss Mark's secret ice cream stop though.

Had a great time after the ride visiting over sandwiches.

I will be seeing somebody this week about the knee, most likely the Dr. that helped Steve with his ITB issues.

Take Care,
Nelson.

Ah, yes. I forgot about the chicken manure being spread just south of us as we rode into Prairie Hill. I told Steve that I thought that was very chicken s__t of them...

Another epic adventure, even before the start(Nelson over sleeping), then outisde of Avalon, Bud had a minor issue with his pedal. We took time to remove our arm & leg warmers. Then about 20 miles down the road, Bud mentioned to me "I have to stop at the top of this hill. I think my my BFT or fork is loose.". We stop at the top of the hill, & Bud says with the deadpan voice " I have  a flat!" So Bud tackles the flat. I see a man about a horse. Bud starts to fill the tire wiht Co2 & I notice a section of the tire is not seeded.

I yelled " stop". Bud sees the problem right away, lets the Co2 out immediately. Re-seeds the tire & re-fills the tire. We hop on the bikes & Bud makes a comment to me " I think I see a cyclist." No sooner than that, Nelson rolls up. It was good to see him & very sorry to hear about the knee issues.

The chicken sh*# smell was noticeable 2 miles south of Prairie Hill & several miles North of Prairie Hill. So Mark M. your secret is out. I had some of the great ice cream.

The return trip back to Italy with a tailwind was nice. I ended up with a 16.1 mph avg. 125.71 total miles.  Overall time of 9 hrs-25 mins. I always enjoy Bud & Nelson company. True friends. Bud is amazing. Too say his plate has been full is an understatement. Thank you both for riding. True Randos.

Nelson, take care of that knee.  Oh, I wish I could have ridden this route prior to TX DOT ruining the route. Nelson's ride notes from 3 yrs ago mentioned "speed route". Not anymore.
