New Cross Training Sport - Kayaking
Aug 30th, 2009, 3:41pm

Yes, that's right.

For the past month or so I've been Kayaking with one of my Flower Mound cycling buds.  Today, the girls went, including Angie.  I'm not yet ready to buy one, but close.  My friend, Bill, uses his GPS, so we can track stats.  We kayaked almost 10 miles in 3 hours.  Wind picked up some, but it was a blast.  He let me use his new carbon fiber paddle.  It cost a whopping $400, for a paddle!  Light weight, and shapped really cool.  Next time I'm going to take my ipod.

It takes a lot of upper body strength and a solid core, neither of which I have very well developed.  So I'm going to continue to Kayak, which is a great way to get a 2-3 hour upper body and core workout.

Yeah I have been wanting to buy a kayak for a while. I did some whitewater rafting in Tenn and NC and it was a blast. My abs hurt for days.  It is a shame there are no good rapids in the area. You can pick them up cheap on craigs, but compared to our bikes they are not really that expensive. REI has everything Kayak you could ever need. I will own one by next year.  Probably on of the longer river yaks.  Smiley

On a side note you should venture down to the nature center by Joe Pool. It has 10 miles of hiking and pretty good elevation changes on two or three of them. On one of the two mile courses I burn 1500 calories in an hour and 15 minutes.

You need to get a Hobie with mirage drive.  You have a recumbent, you need a recumbent kayak also. http://www.hobiecat.com/kayaking/index.html   I am trying one of these out in November when I go to Hattiesburg.  http://www.ridesouth.com/ in Jackson is a dealer.  There are lots of people there who have bents and mirage drive Kayaks.  It's likely going to be my next "bike" purchase.

Are you talking about Cedar Ridge Preserve, off Mountain Creek Parkway, or the one next to the state park?

Funny that someone mentions kayaking, this weekend I'm heading down to Austin to support a friend as she races in the Colorado River 100.

I've got a Wilderness System Pamlico 120 in my garage, kitted out for overnight trips, that I am thinking about selling.  I've tested the Hobie Mirage drive in the past as well, Austin Kayak has them at all their Demo days.

If you want a fast boat, check out these:  http://fitpaddle.com/BOATS.htm

I had a Wilderness Systems Tarpon 160i for some time.  That too, was a fast boat.  And you could fish from it.

That Mirage Drive system on the Hobies is very cool.  But then you've just found another way to train your legs.  At least with a regular type yak, you're hitting upper body.  Either way, getting on the water is a muy bueno way to spend some time.

I've since sold my yak, but if you guys want to get together a float some time, there is a 5-ish mile section of the Brazos below Whitney that is beautiful...and has some good fishing.  REI has cheap rentals, as do other places I'm sure.  It could be a great way to find the bottom of some bottles of beer!!  Smiley

We took kayaks out on Rowlett Creek a couple of times when we lived out there. Pleasant way to spend an afternoon.

Yes the Cedar Ridge Preserve or it used to be called the Dallas Nature Center. I love it out there when it gets cooler out. If you can figure out the how to connect the ones at the state park they are good for a lot of calories to. Most people do one or the other but there is a barely used connector that really makes it a good hike. Then theres the one on 1382 and it is decent for a change of pace but not challenging. I also want to try the new one out on loop 12 and 45.

Oh and back to the Kayaking I was in thingy's tonight and almost pulled the trigger. I agree why put pedals in it I want to work abs and arms in a Yak.

I mentioned Austin Kayak in my previous post, and today I got the email with the Demo Day dates.  The one in Austin is Sept 26/27, so if anyone isn't at the Tejas 500, and wants to check out great deals on kayaks, as well as a chance to try different 'yaks, it is worth the trip.
