Thanks to everyone who replied to my (new to it) post.  I have moved my cleats back as far as they will go and trying to spin more.  By the way, when you say higher cadence, what cadence are we talking about?  As for riding with yall I have a problem.  I work Sat. and Sun.  I ride five days a week on my lunch hour or hour and a half, usually getting 25 to 30 miles three days and 40 to 50 on Sat Sun.  I look forward to retirement so I can ride more everyday, it's like a drug, the bike.  I started riding when I turned 42 and was amazed to get 10 miles in.  Then it quickly became my habit I looked forward to everyday.  So after turning 47 this year I am riding just find and then my neck starts hurting and the doctor tells me I have to quit riding bikes.  I can't do that so I by a stick bike and WOW, I can't believe the difference in comfort, speed and endurance levels.  My buddies I ride with daily don't really want to ride with me anymore.  So enough rambling, I see there are rides out of Glenrose and I live in Granbury so maybe I can hook up with someone down here.  Again, thanks for all the advice.

Mike, we're glad to have you!  I just started back to work otherwise I could have ridden with you anytime this summer.  I look forward to making that happen one day soon.

Hi Mike:  A belated welcome to the Forum and my two cents (if even worth that) on cadence.  When I was an upwrong rider I was in the 85-88 RPM range.  On the Corsa I've settled in around 95, so let's say 10% increase.  Another thing I've noticed which I think you touched on before - my legs will really get pounded if I try to ride at the same heartrate that I cruised on with the DF, around 145 (I'm 57 so adjust for your age).  Much beyond 135 on the Corsa is hard on the legs.  However, 135 HR on the bent is faster on level ground than the DF at 145.  I'm just kind of an average receational rider, so you may have a way different experience.  A lot of the regular posters on this forum are much more capable cyclists than me.

Typical cadences for me are 95-105 rpm on a compact frame road bike with 175 cranks, 90-100 on a std road bike with 170 cranks, 105-130 on the trike with 170 cranks (I'll often hit 150 accelerating from a stoplight), 80-90 on the stick-bike with 165 cranks. They all result in slightly different positions, using slightly different muscle groups. The trike has the most closed position, using mostly just legs. The stick responds better with less stress to a lower cadence and there is far less knee stress than with the other rides so I can get away with it.
 
I posted some pics to a thread in early July I think about how to move your cleats another inch further back than the std SPD shoes allow. This greatly reduces stress on the balls of your feet and ankles and allows you to crank much harder.

I used to ride a mountain bike with road tires and like you, thought I was doing good to ride 30 miles per week.  I rode 30 miles tonight after work on my Bacchetta Giro 20 and average over 120 miles/week.  I averaged about 11 mph on my MTB and averaged 18.6 mph tonight on my Giro.  Like you, riding is all I think about now.  It has become a passion.
 
I quit riding my mountain bike after limping home one afternoon because my back hurt SOOO bad.  When riding my MTB, my back, my neck and my hands constantly hurt.  Riding hurt!  It finally got so bad on August 31, 2006 I said that was it.  The next day, I called a biker friend of mine and told him what happened and he mentioned recumbents might work.  I had never even seen one.  He said the Bike Rack in Granbury had them.  I drove over there that day, rode a Sun EZ Sport and bought it.  It was so comfortable!!!
 
I was riding much longer distances and many more miles per week.  Then recumbutt happened.  I wanted to get faster and get rid of recumbutt so I test rode a Giro 20 and bought it June 2007.  I absolutely love it.
 
I turn 50 this year and am a better bike rider than I have ever been.  It has helped me lose 30 pounds and I am much faster up and down hill and have so much fun riding now.  
 
I live in Stephenville and work as an engineer at the nuclear plant in Glen Rose.  I think I am the only recumbent in Stephenville.  There are a few in Granbury, in fact, my friend rides an older Giro 20 and lives in Granbury.  Maybe we can get together sometime.

I used to ride the Stratus cruising around 100-110 or so but climbing wasn't my forte' and I would end up doing 70-80 going up hills. Now when I ride Gigi I ride as high a cadence as I can but the 11-34 8 speed cassette I have has too wide jumps between gears so I might be spinning 100 in one gear and drop to less than 80 in the next  Smiley

Hey! Back in the 80's my lab was across the hall from CX-1, if you know your history. It was decommissioned just in time to test my automated incore detector system for N in its bay but a lot of people were sad to see it go. You didn't see any 'bents back then... I think the only one I had ever seen was a RANS sailtrike out west of OKC in about 1981-82. The guy used to travel between there and Tulsa a few times a week and said he would often hit 50mph on the highway with it. Woah. I sure wanted one.
