Newb question
Aug 17th, 2009, 10:02am

Saturday's ride was my longest so far on the 'bent, and I came back with an interesting problem.  A small piece of skin (smaller than a penny) on the inside of each of my upper thighs was rubbed raw.  The bibs I wore are a set that I've used lots of times on my upright, and also on a shorter ride on the 'bent.  Just curious if this is something kinda typical, or maybe just a seam in the wrong place.  I didn't find a seam in that spot, but who knows.

Anyone else have that experience, and what did you do to prevent it?

Thanks,
Steve

Forgot to mention that it's not in a place that contacts the seat at all.

There do seem to be some issues wearing shorts that work fine on an upright chafing on the bent.  I have a pair of performance bibs that kill me on the Corsa, just fine on the upright.  Go Figure.

I have semi-permanent scars there.  Before you ride pull the legs up tight around the crotch. It is the material flexing at that spot that rubs the skin raw.

Is this related to the chamois pad, perhaps?   Switch to non-padded shorts, you don't need no steenking pad no more....   Smiley  Seams can definitely be a problem, I remember that a (DF) woman doing the 200 TTTT last year had to drop out after 120 with saddle sores caused by that.

Aerotech Designs makes some good ones, and others can chime in with their recommendations.

+1!  Definitely don't want chamois pad on a recumbent.  I buy the cheap Performance brand bike shorts and cut out the pad.  Works really well at about $20 a pair.

Well, there is a pad in those, but I'm pretty sure the spots were out of the area where the pad is.  Either way, I'll probably grab up some lycra running shorts and save the wear and tear on the bibs for when I'm riding the upright.

Thanks everyone for the replies.

Just make sure the shorts you wear on a 'bent don't have those leg grippers things on the cuffs. Unless you shave your legs they are guaranteed to rip out some hairs... Smiley

You know, I get that on a 300k, but not on anything shorter.  But for me I think it is actually leg contact.  Danged thunder thighs.

On long rides I used to rub my skin raw and I found all of my bibs are pretty well worn on the inner theigh where the rawness was. I found a pair of underarmor heatgear shorts solved the problem for me. The provide absolutely no modesty so I'll wear a very thin pair of baggyish shorts over them which makes them suitable to wear anywhere.
