32% climb
Aug 11th, 2009, 3:56pm

There's a main page post on BROL about the "first recumbent rider to tackle the George St. Hill Climb", which is apparently 500 feet of 18% average.  And it's obvious that the rider wasn't going for speed, but it's fun to watch him do it.

However, I found a similar amateur event in SF, the Fargo Street Hill Climb -- which is a 32% grade...

Here's the view from below and above...

Go to Glen Rose and climb "The Wall", or better yet, ride in the fall "Paluxy Pedal", which climbs The Wall.  It looks like the 2nd picture, however, because of it's steepness, it winds like a mountain road though is about 1/2 mile in length.  I think it peaks at 25%.

I think I may need to get me a nice trike for hills. Spinning up one of those monsters with a rear 406 in 24x34 spinning on a schlumph mountain drive will give me a blistering 1.4mph at 90 rpms.. wheeeee.

And if you could just turn your cranks 90 degrees, gyroscopic effect might just keep you upright.  But I wouldn't bet my life on it. Smiley

The 2 front wheels would do that all by themselves, that's why he mentioned the trike. The technical term for what was being discussed is "winching" and is only limited by limits of traction. Eventually there will be a grade so steep that the drive wheel will not be able to maintain a grip on the pavement and the rider will slide down the hill backwards.

I was actually doing pretty good on the hurricane the other day at low speeds. I think I set a personal best with 2.3mph for about 200ft. Wow was that a loooong 200ft.

If your a good stair climber, I bet you could build a two wheel recumbent to climb that hill. For instance you get an 16 front wheel with 26 rear and build the frame so the the chainring is in front of front wheelclose to the ground  and have the frame slanted so that your almnost level. The weight can be utilize for the traction . I'll try to draw it up and put it on here .
Of coarse this bike will only be use for this purpose , not unless you would like to look at the gorund when riding on flat land.
