The first of these rides is this coming Sunday, so let me bump this thread to the top. I had planned on going fishing Sunday, but since the water at my favorite crappie spot is probably the color of chocolate milk right now, I may consider riding. There are usually some very slow riders on these populaires, so don't feel you have to be a speedster to ride. From George Elizondo on the LSR google group:
 
 
Beanstalk Metric Century – RUSA Populaire  
Sunday 08/2/08, 8:00 AM start  
 
Join us this Sunday, August 2, 2009 for the first in a series of RUSA  
populairs in memory of cyclist and Hotter-N-Hell (HHH) fanatic Mark  
Sachnik. The next three Sunday's will feature a different ride of 62  
km or longer and all riders are welcome. You need not be a member of  
RUSA or LSR to ride. There are no entry fees. These rides are FREE.  
 
 
This Sunday, August 2nd, we will roll out of Princeton for the  
Beanstalk Metric Century. Ride start at 8:00 AM from the parking lot  
at the corner of N 2nd Street and E College Ave across from Lacy  
Elementary School in Princeton, TX. Bring a friend! This is an  
excellent opportunity to introduce someone to LSR, the sport of  
randonneuring and possibly test the long distance waters for some.  
 
 
The main requirements for this ride are:  
1. Sign the waiver  
2. Wear a helmet  
3. Carry a control card, get it "validated" at the turnaround and turn  
it in at the finish.  
In exchange for the above, ride insurance is provided.  
 
 
There are no official ride/pace leaders. Ride at your own pace or with  
a group. There is no formal SAG support and no rest stops - you may  
choose to purchase food/drinks at stores along the route. The ride is  
non-competitive and all finishers from first to last are given equal  
recognition.  
 
 
Please RSVP, even if tentative, so that we have enough control cards

FYI about the Bobcat Populaire(8/9), there has been some road construction.  There are 2 detours(#1-shortly after the Howe control & #2-prior to the Tioga control). The route is now 66.30 miles.

Email George Elizondo at gre099@gmail.com to rsvp. There will be waiver forms there. Everyone seems to have their own way of carrying cue sheets. I wouldn't worry about it on this ride; just check out what others do while you're there. I usually get there a half hour before the ride start.

I used a cue sheet on my first brevet, and haven't carried one since (I usually ride with someone who has one).  I would recommend two things before each ride:
 
1.  Go to the LSR website and preview the cue sheet in advance, some routes are easier than others (some route creators love turns more than others).
2.  Go to Bikely and see if you can find the route, if you can't find it create it.  I usually make a copy from the latest cue sheet.  This helps me remember some of the turns.

If you think you're going to be riding alone, carry a cue sheet in a ziplock bag, otherwise it will rain.
 
BTW, full disclaimer, I use a Garmin Edge 305 when riding.
 
Have fun this Sunday, I'll be sitting in a jet plane, but would rather be riding.

Back before I retired my setup was as so.

 The brevet bag I used had a map sheet pocket in the front and I could attach the bag to a fanny pack I kept to the side. When I was riding I usually pulled it up so it wasn't around my waste but a bit higher. If you carry it on your person you need to keep it in something like a ziplock to keep it intact.
This setup is probably unique to me as the preying mantis bars don't leave alot (any) room for anything mounted to the bike. Sometimes I'd also ride with a garmin etrex with the map already loaded  
Probably far more then you need to carry on the bike.  

'Preciate the advice everybody.  I might try the pencil holder this weekend just cuz I have all the ingredients lying around.  We'll go from there.

V3?  In my dreams.  I have an Actionbent, the cast iron model with the optional 40psi tires, custom untruable wheels and bonus safety feature of an extremely loud drive line!  It's kinda like the Harley-Davidson loud pipe theory.  People hear me coming and get out of the way! I have to say it's never given me any trouble though, and pushing all this weight should help for when I pick up a nice bike.

I see Sharon Stevens is planning to finish BeanStalk, then drive to Celina to do Bobcat that same afternoon....   Pettys, are you planning to join her?   I'm tempted, but I will be hanging with a couple potentially more casual riders for BeanStalk, and may not be able to make a planned Bobcat start time...

Powerbent when to look at that steel V3 at City cycles and was seriously considering it at one time...
