Robert at Bicycles,Inc in Arlington had a recumbent rally entry for the Arlington 4th of July parade on Saturday. 20 'bent riders showed up by parade time at 0900. We were #71 out of 187 entries! 4 or 5 trikes, one bike with trailer and the rest of us were 'bent bicyclists.100 degrees in the shade, ouch! Parade rules stated we had to ride 2 mph over the two mile course. This was a piece of cake for the trikes, but all the bicycles were weaving and wobbling trying to figure out how to go that SLOW! Several of us did surges, where we would start at the back and slowly ride along the edge of the group to the bumper of the float ahead of us. Then we'd find a bit of shade and stop until the group had passed and the front bumper of the float behind us was bearing down. Then we'd slowly work our way to the front of the pack again, then repeat. They gave us a liter of water at the end, but I was still really dry by the time I got back home. I'll take more water the next time! Robert says he'll do this again next year, so plan on making a statement and showing up!
