Racing note
May 9th, 2009, 9:49am

One of my GDB pals, Paula Felix, is very involved with the Superdrome up in Frisco, the racing track...  Well, she apparently had a BAD crash last night, resulting in:

Right side- Broken collarbone, broken scapula, ribs 2-9 broken, collapsed lung. On "BIG" meds.

 Smiley

I'll stick to non-drafting time trialing, thankyouverymuch...    Sad   And I hope she heals completely...

yeowch!  That's nasty.  The superdrome is a really tough venue.  It's very banked, much like TMS is for nascar.  It doesn't take much to crash - all you need to do is brake if you're up on the bank, or lean slightly right and get a pedal to catch the wood and you're down and 20 others are riding right over you, or faling onto you.  Hope she has a fast recovery.

I haven't heard about the specifics of Paula's crash, but I expect it was racing related, which always carries some risk.  But as far as venues go the Superdrome is a very safe place to ride.  You can go too slow through a corner, but in the worst case where you strike a pedal or lose grip its a better surface to land on than hard pavement, and it comes up sooner, and is slanted so impact is much lower than on asphalt or concrete (the worst).  You generally get a lot of warning from your tires on the low end, and since there are no brakes you aren't going to be over cooking your tires in a corner since you are essentially always riding in a straight line while at speed.  There are far fewer accidents like Paula's on the track than in typical criterium or road race, thats one reason if you're interested in racing the track is a nice controlled place to start.

Take Care,
Nelson.

Not bad, maxed out the exercise bike's capabilities, we'll see thursday when I go back to the doctor for the last time but I imagine I'll be okay on the straights, lousy on hills and will walk funny for a while

Hopefully, I haven't put any weight on the joint yet which is why I might have problems on the hills. Doctor visit Thursday morning so I'll likely be out that evening
