RBENT DFW Airport ride - Sat  May 30th
Apr 10th, 2009, 3:03pm

Bring out yer trikes, your tandems, your fat tires, your Visions and Lightnings...  your hiracers, lowracers, Stratii, V3s, Hurricanes, and your XStreams!!!!

Let's get the gang together for some riding around DFW airport, like we've done in the past...  At the moment, there don't seem to be any competing rallies or brevets scheduled for Saturday May 30th, so I'm setting a stake in the ground now...  Some can make Saturdays, some can't, so I'm just setting it for whomever can come out!

In the past, we've met at the AVAYA business location just north of 635 on Freeport -- for the moment, we'll say meet there again, ready for an 8:30AM rollout (may be 8AM if it's going to be a hot day).  We'll ride together as a group down to the Shell station, then figure out different speed and distance groups from there.  The GDB airport ride will be arriving at the Shell station around 9, so it should be fun...

This is intended to include MULTIPLE SPEED AND DISTANCE GROUPS, as well as we can make things fit.  Once around the airport from the Shell station is 15 miles, 18 if you include the tower loop.  Given that the Shell station is a handy "rest stop," and that there are additional bathroom facilities at the south end transfer station, I would heartily encourage everyone attending to consider doing two loops, or 35-ish miles, at a minimum.  The faster groups will have bonus mile options, so that we plan on everyone finishing the overall ride in the 11:30 -- 12:00 timeframe -- then we can go to Hard Eight for BBQ lunch!!!

If the more adventurous want even more bonus miles, consider joining up with someone to ride out to the starting point instead of driving (and obviously riding home, as well).  There is a reasonable possibility that I will depart at 7AM from Preston/Forest, to ride the ~18 miles out there (and back).

Enjoy,
Paul

Seems like it's been forever since I've ridden with everyone, but I'll be out of town for this unfortunately.  Darn!!!!

Sure that sounds good.  I should have some more mileage on the xstream by then.  So far 30 miles on the west orange in Florida.  I already had one small crash when a moron in a car decided to start going straight and then make a fast right turn right in front of me.  Nothing scratched on the bike or me so it  was all good.

It's been a while since I've participated in the GDB Airport Ride, but apparently there's significant construction going on at the north end at Texan Trail...   Here are a couple recent posts from the GDB discussion board:

North Airfield Drive is now seriously in construction phase. The divided highway is now two-way with all traffic diverted to one side. We had to ride on a temporary asphalt shoulder today and it doesn't look like things are going to get any better for awhile. Everything is OK until the road begins to turn east at the north end. An alternative might be a turn off Airfield onto 17th then north to Keller Grapevine via Texan Trail and back to the Shell through the warehouse district. Any thoughts on other alternatives?

We live in the area and have figured different ways to alter the ride so we don't have to go to the airport at all. When the highway shuts down, you won't even be able to get to Texan Trail. If you go the same way out towards the Shell station and hang a right on regent (just after you climb over 635 on freeport) and then another right on Royal, there is a new Shell station that is really nice on the south side of I-635.

So I dunno what do do, for the moment.  However, keep that Saturday May 30th in mind for a ride, I'll figure something out in the next few weeks.

Paul

Greg had postponed the rbent ride and picnic he was going to host. Perhaps we should have it that day.

My only thought on that would be that the Trinity Trail would probably be a pretty crowded place on a Saturday morning -- but it's certainly worth considering...

I'll catch up on the back side as y'all pass me on my CG. It's a smooth little machine and I like the old timey couch springs in the seat  Grin
